On a special LIVE Boost Boerne Business recorded in the Richter Studio at a book signing event, host Baron Wiley celebrates the release of “Athletic as a Camel” by Stan Leech with illustrations by Mykala Jones. Coach Leech shares the book’s inspiration from a high school track moment when his coach jokingly called him “as athletic as a camel,” then praised his effort, a lesson that stayed with him for 50 years; the book is positioned as a multi-generational family read dedicated to his wife, Carla. Jones discusses how she became a full-time artist, her long-standing connection to the Leech family, and her hand-drawn watercolor and colored pencil process, including a vertical foldout page that will appear in future books. They preview a follow-up children’s book, “Wise As a Lamb,” aimed for Christmas, and explain where to buy the current book locally and on Amazon July 28, with plans for wider distribution.

The US Men’s Soccer Team had no luck against Belgium yesterday… The country that invented the modern waffle turned the US into a pancake, with a 4-1 victory. Malik Tillman for the US scored in the 31st minute, then two minutes later, Belgium tied. It would only go downhill from there. The US is now the final co-host country to be eliminated. Portugal and Christianio Ronaldo also were eliminated yesterday by Spain in a 1-0 victory for the Spanish. Two more matches occur today before the round of 8 starts on Thursday. 

And as of yesterday, contracts could officially be signed in the NBA, so the two draftees for the Spurs- Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr., along with free agent Tobias Harris, all made it official- they will be on the roster for the upcoming year. More Summer League this week coming from Las Vegas where Carter Bryant is also expected to play.

And happy birthday to Doc Severinsen - former band leader for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show who turns 99 today.  And also a special Boerne Radio salute to Sir Richard Starkey - the former drummer for band leader Johnny Lennon in a band from Liverpool, England called The Beatles.    Before Ringo joined the Beatles, he played in a band called The Ravin’ Texans.  Today he turns 86.   And here in Boerne we say happy birthday to Kimberly Simmonds and Micah Morgan at Quality Innovations.


Breaking News!  The Celebration of America’s 250th birthday isn’t quite over here in Boerne. The Cibolo Creek Quilters Guild has beautiful, handcrafted blankets on display at the Patrick Heath Public Library and in Boerne City Hall to commemorate our great nation. These patriotic quilts will be on display for the entire month of July.


Congratulations to Boerne Assistant City Manager Danny Zincke for completing a municipal leadership program hosted by the North Central Council of Governments. The 8 month program focused on municipal leadership, the ever-evolving challenges of local government, debt management and data analytics. During his time, Zincke has already worked on a number of capital improvement projects, including work on River Road Park, the amphitheater at Patrick Heath, and the Old No. 9 Trail. His municipal career spans more than 20 years, including previous service with the cities of Burnet, Buda, and Copperas Cove. 


Boerne ISD has named Adrian Gutierrez as its new Director of Career and Technical Education. Gutierrez officially joined the district on July 6 after serving as CTE Director for Del Valle ISD. With more than 20 years in education, he’ll oversee programs that prepare students for college, careers, military service, and industry certifications while expanding partnerships with local businesses and colleges.

It’s Monday July 6th. 

 

And it was on this date in 1943 the USS William D. Porter Destroyer was commissioned.   The Porter accidentally launched a torpedo that nearly missed the USS Iowa, which happened to have President Roosevelt on board at the time.  Nancy Reagan was born on this date in 1921, and George W. Bush turns 80 today. 

And we say happy birthday to Kendall County Commissioner Andra Wisian, Beth Nixon, Carol MacLane, and Sandy Gulledge.

 

And as reported in the Boerne Star by managing editor Jeff Flinn, The Motor Cycle Safety Foundation has joined the call for more protective measures along Highway 46 West. The national organization wrote a letter to TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams last week urging the Department to increase safety enhancements along the deadly 11-mile stretch of roadway west of Boerne. The MSF does support the proposed improvements made by TxDOT and is mainly hoping these changes will be implemented sooner than later. 

 

The Star also reported a year after the tragic July 4th floods, new data is out from Extreme Weather Survivors. 54% of the survivors said they felt abandoned by the government during and after the event, 54% said they felt emotional distress, and 48% said they had to delay or forgo basic necessities due to recovery costs. The natural disaster claimed the lives of 139 people last year, and cost over a billion dollars in damages. Many victims are still displaced or working to repair what was damaged. 

 

And the MixHaus art gallery in Comfort has announced a Summer Mix exhibition now through August 23rd. The exhibit will feature art from local artists, and is meant to emulate the laidback, relaxed pace of the summer months in Comfort. Throughout the summer, the artwork will continuously rotate and feature various mixed discipline works of art. 

 

This Wednesday, your Greater Boerne Chamber is celebrating the anniversary for the Ministry of Dance with a ribbon cutting on 1:30.  On Thursday it’s the long awaited Nothing Bundt Cakes at 11:30, and Brown Hearing Centers at 1:30.  And then on Friday at 4 is the celebration of the new location of DeVino Cellars.
