The numbers are in for Lemonade Day hosted by the Boerne Chamber.   Anna De Hoyos and Isabella Le raised an impressive $2,110 during the competition, as well as took home the prize for Best Tasting Lemonade AND People’s Choice Award. The funds were given to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, and an additional $500 will be donated in their honor.  The 1st Place Entrepreneur of the Year was Allison and Brayden Wright with Ally and Bray’s Art Splash Lemonade.  And the Judge’s Choice Award went to Seth Castro.   See the full list of all the winners in the news blog at BoerneRadio.com.

Just a quick reminder today is the last day to early vote in the runoff elections.  Election day is next Tuesday.  And thanks to the results of a previous election, City Council has expanded the scope of the voter approved construction project on Adler Road, leading to a doubling of the design costs according to San Antonio Express News. Initially the project would have included a culvert added to a low water crossing and the addition of a turning lane for 1.6 million. Now the City is considering adding a round about, drainage and traffic operations. At this point, construction is expected to finish in 2028, with design costs at an estimated 3.3 million. 

 

And it’s Memorial Day weekend, which means City Offices will be closed on Monday. What will be open is something that never closes, tubing on the Horseshoe near Canyon Lake, which is expecting 130,000 visitors this weekend.  

Here in Boerne there’s the Memorial Day Concert in Main Plaza on Sunday at 7, The Boerne American Legion Captain Mark Tyler Voss #313 is hosting their annual Ceremony Monday morning at 10 at Veterans Plaza…speaking is Mrs. Marcy Voss, the mother of Capt. Mark Tyler Voss.  At 11 is the ceremony at the Boerne Cemetery host by the Boerne VFW Post 688.  And the Air Force Band of the West is performing at Champion High School with a free concert on Monday night.

Starting in Buda with Boerne Champion- underdogs coming into the series against Rouse, and down in the series 1-0 from Wednesday’s game. If they lose tonight, the season could come to an end. But hey maybe the Champion graduation being delayed yesterday suggests May showers bring May flowers… or however the saying goes. It’s Graduation Day for Champion High School and if the thunderstorm this morning was all we get today then the ceremony will still be in Boerne ISD Stadium tonight at 8.  Plan B is tomorrow morning at 8.

Friday’s Boerne High School graduation ceremony has officially moved indoors. The ceremony will still begin at 8, but will now take place at the Northside ISD Sports Gym. District officials say the change was made to ensure the safety and comfort of students, families, and staff. Parents and graduates can expect additional details from Principal Wilson later today. 

 

Boerne ISD announced that four of its elementary school student leadership teams have been selected as recipients of the Student Leadership Awards by TEPSA. Across the state, only 167 Pre-K through 8 student leadership teams were chosen for this honor-Boerne ISD got a nod for Cibolo Creek, Fabra, Curington and Herff. The four teams spearheaded impactful initiatives including literacy programs, kindness campaigns, student mentoring, and community service projects for local families and veterans. 

 

So the names are out for the wild Texas Wives of Boerne - it’s Aaryn Williams, Ashlee Nichols, Alli McAnelly, Arrari, Gabby Huffman, Amanda Watters, and Hailey Head…

And here’s a surprise…There are a few people around town who are not happy with a reality TV show filming here in Boerne. As of this morning, a petition opposing the show had 577 signatures on Change.org, citing the amplification of personal dramas, romanticizing conflicts and skewed perspectives on the town as main reasons why. As heard on Boerne Radio, game 1 of a best of 3 moved up in the week because of pending storms. Champion scored in the first inning as they would strike first, but Rouse had other plans and scored two. Down the stretch, 2-1 would stay the score, and 2-1 was the final. Champion faces elimination tomorrow night in game 2. We’ll see what happens. It’ll air on Boerne radio as well. 

It’s a new series for the Spurs as well- in game 2 last night, turnovers absolutely KILLED the Spurs’ game. 21 in fact… Tim Duncan would certainly not approve. Stephon Castle led the team in points with 25. However, the Spurs would drop game 2 by a final of 122-113. The series is now tied 1-1 heading back to San Antonio tomorrow night for game 3.

How about that gulley washer last night - downtown Boerne got an inch and half and Fair Oaks Ranch got 2 inches with more on the way.  Boerne ISD is keeping an on that for our Graduation Ceremonies.


36 students made Boerne ISD history on Tuesday as they graduated with both their Highschool diplomas and associates degrees. 2026 is the first year that a cohort of PTech students is graduating, meaning students enter the workforce or college with at least a certification in health sciences. 

 

And some graduates are getting recognition and funding this week thanks to the Boerne Chamber of Commerce. Over the past three weeks, they have awarded $14,500 to nine outstanding students from Boerne and Comfort Independent School Districts. We don’t have the time to say first and last names, so you know who you are: congratulations to Kaitlyn, Julia, Isabella, Tatum, Kaydence, Simon, Robert, Cade and Victoria. 

 

After more than a decade on television, and 18 years as an online show, “Goodtaste with Tanji” is coming to an end.  Boerne resident and Host Tanji Patton announced this will be the show’s final TV season after 11 years on air across Texas and beyond. Patton says she’s actually shifting focus to a higher calling going all in with “Goodtaste for the Soul” with more inspirational stories and using her voice for Him.  She also said she’ll continue the food and wine content online. She thanked viewers, supporters and sponsors including our Wild Birds Unlimited here in Boerne,  as she begins what she calls an exciting new chapter. 

 

Two lawsuits filed by individuals who reported being injured in the August 2024 bleacher collapse at the Kendall County Fairgrounds have been settled. The plaintiffs, Garret Daley and Lindsay Ward said that they suffered serious injuries when the structure collapsed, trapping them underneath the debris. The legal action sought compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and asked for punitive damages.

The City of Boerne is looking for your input on the new name of Northside Community Park. Potential names need to be meaningful and representative of Boerne, whether they reflect our culture, geography, history or celebrate a hometown hero. With each submitted name, you’ll need to explain in detail how it is connected to the site. The survey is open until May 29th, and once all of the names are submitted, they will be compiled and presented to City Council. Foundation Unites has unveiled plans for a monument in tribute of the 119 lives lost during the Guadalupe River July 4th floods last year. The River of Angels Monument will be placed in Kerrville and stand 36-feet high, which was the height of the flood crest. Built with Texas Hill Country limestone and iron accents, the structure will be engineered with reinforced foundations and deep pilings to withstand future flooding. The monument will include tributes to victims, rescue workers, and volunteers, along with prayer gardens and memorial plaques. Organizers say construction funding will rely on donations and community support. 

 

As of now, Champion Seniors will graduate at 8 pm on Thursday, and Boerne High will be at 8 on Friday as the district keeps an eye on the weather - Thursday looks most concerning  for heavy storms, possible flash flooding, and damaging winds. Boerne ISD asks that parents and students remain flexible if they need to adjust ceremony times.

Champion Baseball Regional Finals games are tomorrow night, Friday night and Saturday at 2 if needed.

And speaking of the Spurs, if you missed game 1 of the west finals, you probably missed the most anxiety-inducing NBA game in years, but in a good way! Both Oklahoma City and San Antonio exchanged the leads down the stretch… Spurs without De’Aaron Fox by the way as he wasn’t cleared from his ankle injury… Wemby had 41 including a step back 3 to tie late… but the game would still go to double overtime. In the end, San Antonio got their ducks in a row and won game 1, by a score of 122-115. San Antonio now has the series lead 1-0, also granting OKC their first loss in these playoffs. And if game 2 should be similar to the heavyweight bout game 1 provided, I suggest you watch the Survivor 50 finale on demand Thursday morning- because Wednesday night will house game 2 of this best of 7 and you won’t want to miss a second… and if our guys play like they did last night, they may very well get to say to the Thunder, “The Spurs have spoken.”

Both Oklahoma City and San Antonio exchanged the leads down the stretch&hellip; Spurs without De&rsquo;Aaron Fox by the way as he wasn&rsquo;t cleared from his ankle injury&hellip; Wemby had 41 including a step back 3 to tie late&hellip; but the game would still go to double overtime. In the end, San Antonio got their ducks in a row and won game 1, by a score of 122-115. San Antonio now has the series lead 1-0, also granting OKC their first loss in these playoffs. And if game 2 should be similar to the heavyweight bout game 1 provided, I suggest you watch the Survivor 50 finale on demand Thursday morning- because Wednesday night will house game 2 of this best of 7 and you won&rsquo;t want to miss a second&hellip; and if our guys play like they did last night, they may very well get to say to the Thunder, &ldquo;The Spurs have spoken.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Early voting begins today for the Primary Run-off Election - Election Day officially is next Tuesday. On the Republican ballot in Kendall County are races for US Senator between Ken Paxton and John Cornyn,  for Attorney General it’s between Chip Roy and Mayes Middleton, for Railroad Commissioner you have Jim Wright and Bo French, and for Criminal Appeals Judge in Place 3 your choices are Alison Fox and Thomas Smith.  And locally, incumbent Shane Stolarczyk and Ricky Gleason are facing off for County Judge, while County Commissioner Precinct 2 is seeing the run off race between J.C. Taylor and Andra Wisian.

 

On the Democratic Ballot, no local races - just the runoff for Lieutenant Governor Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Isaias Velez,, and for Attorney General, your choices are Joe Jaworski and Nathan Johnson.

If you’d like to meet our local candidates one last time, there’s a good chance they will be curbside outside the Annex…and a greater chance they will be under their tent because of our wonderful chance to get at least 4 inches of rain this week.

 

There was a small chlorine leak over the weekend in the 100 block of Deer Trail in the Ranger Creek subdivision. The Boerne Fire Department and Kendall County Sheriff’s Office quickly jumped into action with the help of the San Antonio Fire Department. All affected residents were notified, and the leak was mitigated by midday Saturday. 

 

The directors for the Hill Country Council for the Arts and the Agricultural Museum paid tribute with a post and story in the Boerne Star announcing the sad passing of Rob Ziegler. Rob was a longtime servant on the Boerne City Council, as well as the treasurer for numerous art organizations.  He was on the Dickens on Main Committee and was there when the Wild Bill Hickok landmark was installed in Main Plaza.  Boerne Radio had the honor of emceeing the final Boerne Beirfest that Rob Ziegler helped organize.  In his honor Rob's wife, Lucy, will be hosting a memorial service for him from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday June 6 at The AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center.

Champion baseball swept La Joya Palmview over the weekend and are now in the regional final- they will now face the Raiders of Leander Rouse - the Raiders beat Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial by winning the 3rd game and scoring 4 in the 5th then one more in the 6th after a one hitter - final score 5 to 0. The winner of this round heads to the state semis. A lot is on the line. We will carry the games on Boerne Radio… the times and exact dates for the series are still to be announced. 

At the state track meet, Comfort’s Carter Pape earned a silver medal in the long jump competition. The only other Comfort athlete there, Molly Gowan, placed 6th in the high jump. And Boerne High’s Presley Merkins set a new school record in the 800m with a time of 2:11.99. 

Alright, its time- game 1 of the NBA Western Conference Finals is TONIGHT. After the Spurs clinched with a win Friday, they now head up I-35 to Oklahoma City to start the best of 7. Shae Gilgeous-Alexander for Oklahoma City has won back to back MVP titles yesterday and will receive his trophy before game 1 tonight- Wemby only received 5 first place votes in that election. In other words, prepare for a fire to ignite from the Frenchman tonight. San Antonio did go 4-1 against the Thunder in the regular season, with the last meeting between the two being in February. But Spurs fans, don’t let that winning record be the decider early on. It will be a physical, stressful, and challenging series for both teams in fact. Just know in the end, the better team will be heading to the Finals and will for sure have earned it. No need for a million subscriptions this time- the entire series will air on NBC and Peacock. Tonight’s tip is scheduled for 7:30.

Before KBRN AKA Boerne Radio, KTXD launched in Boerne in the late 1940s.  The story of the first Department of Public Safety radio station right after this.

Back in 1938, Kendall County placed its trust in a man named Sid Edge, electing him sheriff. And not just once — five times in a row. For a decade, he wore the badge, kept the peace, and earned the respect of his neighbors.

Then in 1948, his watch ended suddenly. After an altercation with a prisoner, Shasn’t rested at all.

It’s still alive — in service, in education, and in the next generation of Boerne.

Sheriff Edge suffered a fatal heart attack. He was just 59 years old.

The county still needed a sheriff. And so the Commissioners Court turned to his son — William B. Edge — appointing him to finish the job his father had started.

One of Bill Edge’s very first acts was to ask for something new… something modern. Two-way radios. Installed right into the sheriff’s cars.

And just one month earlier, Bill Edge had stood at a podium in Boerne, speaking at the dedication of a brand-new Department of Public Safety radio station — KTXD.

In 2024, Boerne ISD repurposed an Admin and storage building at the corner of Main and Johns Road.  That building is the home of The Boerne Academy and is officially called The George C. and Bedelia Mitchell Learning Center.   The story of it’s name sakes right after this…

George C. and Bedelia Mitchell were the owners of Mitchell Cleaners on Plant Street and their love for Boerne and Country ran deep.  George and Be delia married in September of 1942,  and a month later George was in the European theatre with the United States Navy in World War II. When he came home, George kept serving.  In 1969 George was the first President of The Boerne Crusaders Club that provided scholarships and mentored students.  It also tackled community projects like building a new gazebo in Main Plaza. George Mitchell earned the 1973 Citizen of the  Year Award by the Lions Club.  Bedelia was a force of her own with the nickname Mrs P.T.A.  She worked at Curington Elementary for 12 years and gave private Spanish lessons.  In 1971 The State of Texas awarded her the Tops of Texas Award for her volunteer and civic service in Boerne.  Today the Mitchells rest in Boerne Cemetery but their legacy hasn’t rested at all.

It’s still alive — in service, in education, and in the next generation of Boerne.

In 2024, Boerne ISD repurposed an Admin and storage building at the corner of Main and Johns Road.&nbsp; That building is the home of The Boerne Academy and is officially called The George C. and Bedelia Mitchell Learning Center. &nbsp; The story of it&rsquo;s name sakes right after this&hellip;

George C. and Bedelia Mitchell were the owners of Mitchell Cleaners on Plant Street and their love for Boerne and Country ran deep.&nbsp; George and Be delia married in September of 1942,&nbsp; and a month later George was in the European theatre with the United States Navy in World War II. When he came home, George kept serving.&nbsp; In 1969 George was the first President of The Boerne Crusaders Club that provided scholarships and mentored students.&nbsp; It also tackled community projects like building a new gazebo in Main Plaza. George Mitchell earned the 1973 Citizen of the&nbsp; Year Award by the Lions Club.&nbsp; Bedelia was a force of her own with the nickname Mrs P.T.A.&nbsp; She worked at Curington Elementary for 12 years and gave private Spanish lessons.&nbsp; In 1971 The State of Texas awarded her the Tops of Texas Award for her volunteer and civic service in Boerne.&nbsp; Today the Mitchells rest in Boerne Cemetery but their legacy hasn&rsquo;t rested at all.
It&rsquo;s still alive &mdash; in service, in education, and in the next generation of Boerne.

As Boerne’s Little League Team made its historic World Series run in 2024, baseball has deep roots in Boerne.  The story of The Boerne White Sox right after this.

Baseball came to Boerne around 1900, and the first picture of a White Sox Team is from 1912. Boerne White Sox players’ names you might recognize include Fabra, Ebensberger, Bergmann, and one you might not remember…Charlie English from the 1940’s who went on to play pro-ball with the St. Louis Cardinals.

In 1862, when Kendall County was brand new, its people chose a young man — just 28 years old — to wear the star.  The story of Kendall County’s first Sheriff…John William Sansom right after this.

John William Sansom wasn’t just any lawman. Born in Alabama, raised in Texas, he’d already seen his share of frontier fights. He was a scout, a soldier, a man who could track through cedar and rock and not lose his way. And when the Civil War broke out, he was opposed to leaving the Union but stayed loyal to Texas.  Sansom traveled to Austin and met with Governor Sam Houston to offer his services.  Houston gave him a Colt revolver instead.

As sheriff, he rode against rustlers and bandits. Later, as a Texas Ranger captain, he faced far greater dangers — Comanche raids, border outlaws, and even the infamous Nueces Massacre, where neighbors turned on neighbors in a time of bitter division.

John William Sansom survived it all. He kept the peace when there was precious little of it. And he lived until 1920 to the age of 86 — and rests next to his wife Victoria in Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio.

The Live Oak Shopping Center, located on North Main at School Street, has had numerous businesses throughout the years…The Dollar Tree is one of the latest…but another 5 and Dime Varity Store located there named Winn’s had a Boerne connection.  The story of Mr. Murray Arvin Winn Jr. right after this.

At their peak, 106 of Winn’s stores dotted Texas and surrounding states—and then Walmart came to town.

Murray Arvin Winn, Jr. graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1935 with an accounting degree to help run the family business. After selling the stores in the 1950s, Murray saw something few others could see—pastures northeast of San Antonio… that he transformed into a brand-new community. He called it Windcrest.

And when it was time to retire… he and his beloved wife Barbee chose the Hill Country—settling right here in Boerne, worshipping at First United Methodist Church.

Boerne Texas History - Winn's and Murray Arvin Winn

In the charming Hill Country town of Comfort, Texas… stands a grand limestone building that has welcomed travelers for nearly a century and a half.

Today, it’s known as Hotel Giles—named after famed San Antonio architect Alfred Giles, who designed it in 1880… at just 27 years old.  The story of Giles in Comfort…right after this.

Originally, The Giles was the Ingenhuett Hotel, commissioned by local pioneers Peter Ingenhuett and Marie Karger. Back then, stagecoaches rolled through town, and weary guests found rest in its dog-run layout, stone fireplace, and copper roof.

As Comfort grew, so did the hotel. Giles returned in 1894 to add elegant arches and Gothic charm. It was later renamed the Faust Hotel in 1909… but after World War II, as motels took over and German heritage faced prejudice, the old hotel closed its doors.

Then came the rescue.

In 1985, Dr. Bob and Diane Potter restored the fading landmark and earned it Texas Historical Landmark status.

In 1951, the school moved to a larger campus on Johns Road, and by 1971, Boerne High School as we know it today was born.

Home of the Greyhounds…
 Where championships were won, futures were formed, and Boerne pride was passed from one class to the next.

And though the buildings have changed, the spirit never has.

Because in Boerne, education isn’t just about books.

It’s about roots.

Boerne Texas History - Boerne High School - 209 - 070725

 

At the corner of Main Street and Rosewood is the home of Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery.  But back in the 80’s…the 1880’s…Mr. William Kuhlmann opened Kuhlmann’s Apothecary…one of the first drug stores in Boerne.

William Kuhlmann was a druggist by trade, and built his home on the hill behind the old high school on Blanco Road known as the Kuhlmann-King House.

His drugstore was purchased by William J. Wilke shortly after 1900.  Willie was the son of a Berghiem farmer, and earned his high school diploma by correspondence after finishing the 7th grade at the one-teacher Bergheim school.

He then graduated from pharmacy school at the University of Maryland.  In 1909, William Wilke was to become Boerne’s first Mayor.

Behind the old City Hall Building is The Kuhlmann-King House, sitting on what is known as Boerne’s Historic Hill…So who was William Kuhlmann and who was Selina King?  The answer…and tragic story…right after this.

In 1885 William Kuhlmann and his bride Marie immigrated from Germany to Boerne for a better life.  He built that home, and the building next door for their kitchen and washroom. They lived there until Marie died during childbirth along with their infant in 1896.  Selina King with her 8 children rented the house for 5 years, and purchased it from Mr. Kuhlmann.  Selina King was not from Germany.  She came to Boerne in 1882 from England with her husband Edmund King as the family leased The Boerne Hotel before it was called the Kendall Inn.  Edmund King was killed behind the hotel in an accident while cleaning his gun.  Widow King continued to raise her kids in Boerne and died in 1910 at the age of 78.

When you meander past the Starbucks on Upper Balcones, you’ll find Dodge Road…named after Frederick J. Dodge, who was a Texas cattleman at the end of his life, but in the middle…well, we’ll tell you more about Detective Fred Dodge right after this.

Fred Dodge worked as a lawman and as an undercover agent for Wells Fargo in California, Nevada, and Arizona - protecting stagecoaches and solving train holdups.

He became a constable in Tombstone, Arizona, where he befriended the legendary Wyatt Earp.  In fact, Dodge’s diaries were the basis for the book The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp, and they also documented his encounters with the Doolin and Dalton Gangs.   In 1906, Dodge came to Leon Springs on vacation and fell in love with the Texas Hill Country.  He purchased 2000 acres and named it  Dodge Ranch.  Dodge died in 1938 at the age of 84 and is buried in the Boerne Cemetery.
