It’s Wednesday March 4th. 

 

 It was on the tenth day of the siege on the Alamo in 1836 that James Butler Bonham returned to the fort with news of reinforcements...men that would never come.  It’s also been learned in recent history that James Bonham and William Barrett Travis were 2nd cousins.

 

Kendall County Voters showed up at the polls yesterday, more than 33% of registered voters with Elections Department officials citing a moderately heavy turnout for an off-year primary.  The race was close for County Judge where Ricky Gleason surged on election day and made-up ground but couldn’t catch Judge Shane Stolarezyk who led by 323 votes, however Shane secured 44% of the vote and in Texas you need 50% so we’re heading a runoff.  Besa Martin received almost 15% of that vote.  County Commissioner Andra Wisian finished ahead of Challenger J.C. Taylor by 9%age points but again she secured 47% so they too will be in runoff gear.   Early voting for those races begins May 18th, and election day is Tuesday May 26th.

 

In the State races in a very crowded District 21 for Congress Boerne’s Mike Wheeler came in 2nd in Kendall County to an overwhelming win overall going to Mark Teixeira with 61% of all the votes.  Advancing to a runoff for the Texas Attorney General Primary are Mayes Middleton with 39% and Chip Roy with 31% - voters in Kendall County gave Chip Roy 55% of our votes.

 

Congrats to all the candidates who ran a clean and friendly race…well…mostly.

 

The Hill Country Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has officially changed its name to Hill Country Animal Rescue. The organization is a private, no-kill shelter serving the Texas Hill Country with a mission to give every pet the best possible life through rescue, adoption, community awareness, and advocacy.  They rely entirely on donations and volunteers, so if you want to contribute to the cause, you can visit their website at hillcountryanimalrescure.org. 

 

Shout out to the Center and Meals on Wheels for delivering over 1,000 meals each week. Volunteers prepare and deliver these meals to a vulnerable aging population here in Kendall County, all while providing care, dignity, and hope.

Headlines: Geneva girls soccer 1 win away from title / CHS & BHS in 3-hour softball meeting / Brooks Perez logged first collegiate HR / Spurs dominate 76ers

We’ll start with Geneva girls soccer, and history made last night. Going into yesterday’s semifinal game, there were only 2 wins separating them from a TAPPS state title. Now, it’s only 1. Your Lady Eagles shut out John Paul II and will now play for a state title… They are so close! More info coming soon. 

Back in Boerne, Greyhound and Champion softball squared off for the first time this season… and a three-hour game transpired into a 17-13 win for Boerne High. The Boerne Star is reporting 23 hits and 8 errors combined in a competitive game.

And Greyhound baseball alum Brooks Perez, now a player with Duke University, hit his first home run. He hit it back on February 14 in a game against Maine. That for sure, especially Greyhound fans, makes them #BoerneProud. 

The Spurs won a very lopsided ball game in Philly last night, defeating the 76ers 131-91. They come back home Thursday after a long Rodeo Road Trip, where the Pistons will be in town at 7pm.

It’s Tuesday March 3rd. 

 

And it was on this date in 1931 that Francis Scott Key’s song The Star-Spangled Banner was declared the American National Anthem by the US Congress.  Key wrote the song in 1814 after seeing the American flag flying following the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. 

It’s also Primary Election Day!  Here are some of the spots where you can cast your ballot here in Boerne. The City Hall training room will be open from 7 to 7 today, as well as First Baptist Church, the Kendall County Fairgrounds, The Burdick Community Center, Ninetee:Ten Church, and Boerne Bible Church. Other polls included the Bergheim VFD, the Waring Fire House, the Kendalia Community Center, the Sisterdale Community Center and Comfort Baptist. 

 

After 25 years of dedicated service to Boerne ISD Athletics, Terry Gault is moving on. Gault spent seven years at Boerne High School and 18 at Champion High School, serving the past nine years as Assistant Athletic Director. AD Coach Stan Leach honored him in his announcement saying Terry Gault is known as a steady presence and trusted advocate for student-athletes and families, Gault is now headed to Northeast ISD as Assistant Athletic Director. Boerne ISD says he’ll be greatly missed on the sidelines and in the training room.

 

A Boerne Police school resource officer is taking on a new role — wildlife educator. Corporal David Chavez helped launch a first-of-its-kind partnership between Kendall Elementary and the San Antonio Zoo. Through the “Animal Connections” program, a different zoo animal visits the campus each month.  The program began in January with Corporal Chavez pictured with a chinchilla Dr. Garbanzo Beans The First - and recently Yavari the Sloth visited and is already inspiring students with lessons focused on themes like patience and perseverance.  The plans are to continue through the spring and possibly into summer school.

 

The City of Fair Oaks Ranch is removing a tree from Fair Oaks Parkway, resulting in a temporary traffic shift today and tomorrow. Fair Oaks Parkway between Oakview Pass and Pope Crossing will continue to have two-way traffic shifted to one side of the street, while the opposite side remains dedicated to tree contractors to ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently.There are minor delays expected, but the work should be done quickly.
