The Spurs drafted well last night. They needed big men and they got them. First, at number 20, Jayden Quaintance from Kentucky was chosen by the Spurs based off of size. The Spurs then managed to score their way to the 26th pick on a trade via Denver, and got Tarris Reed Jr. from UConn- another valuable pick in the draft. All-in-all, I would give the Spurs an A for both their picks.. we’ll see how these guys fit in. Round 2 of the Draft is tonight. 

Big slate of games tonight in the FIFA World Cup- Switzerland vs Canada will start at 2pm, Scotland and Brazil begin at 5pm, and Mexico plays Czechia tonight at 8. Some teams find themselves fighting for seeding as the knockout stage will begin soon.

It’s Wednesday June 24th. 

 

And some Boerne Radio musical birthdays include Curt Smith with Tears For Fears, he turns 65 today, Mick Fleetwood the drummer and cofounder of Fleetwood Mac is 79, and Pam Tillis is 69.  

 

And right here in Boerne we say Happy Birthday to Claire Berger with CBC Business Consulting, the recently retired Debi Watson from Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries, also Jesse Kleinpeter who I worked with at a radio station in San Antonio, Alex Lopez with Kendall County Roofing celebrating #50! Welcome to the club.  Couple more…Mr Juan Servin, and Kelly Moore.

In last night’s City Council Meeting the top 14 names that were submitted for the naming of the park on Adler Road were kicked around and debated…the top one being Boerne Heritage Park, followed by Boerne Commons, and in effort to be more unique with a German touch Boerne Erbschaft which means “heritage” and also Volkspark / The People’s Park were also submitted.  And none of those 14 names were selected.

Well, if you know my friend Paul Giguere here in Boerne you know he’s a coach, a consultant and a huge passion for his faith-based volleyball club.  He called me yesterday with some exciting news from the road as the Hill Country Flow Volleyball Ladies were able to raise $9000 in business sponsorships to make the trip to Phoenix, and they play today!  Here’s Coach Tori and team from the road.

Awww….thank you ladies…and by the way while we’ll get to 91 today, 90 is the LOW today in Phoenix and the high is 109.

 

Boerne City Lake has recorded one of its most significant rises in the last quarter century, producing the third-largest one-week water level increase recorded at the lake in the past 26 years. Between June 14th and the 22nd, the lake rose almost 10 feet, setting the rise amongst the July 2002 floods and the May 2015 floods. Parks and Recreation Director Lizette Jimenez noted how excited the city was to start the summer with water levels this high, especially considering there were more than 200,000 guests who visited last year. 

 

Boerne’s efforts to preserve the Hill Country’s dark skies were highlighted at the recent Hill Country Dark Sky Conference in Fredericksburg. More than 75 leaders from across the region gathered to discuss ways to reduce light pollution and protect nighttime views. Boerne Environmental Program Manager Ryan Bass shared our city’s work on lighting regulations, public outreach, and infrastructure improvements aimed at preserving star-filled skies for future generations. 

 

And the Boerne Star reported that yesterday County Commissioners approved an architectural concept that will move the elections and Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 offices into the former Burdick Community Center on Old San Antonio Road.  However, the building is not large enough for The Veterans Service Center and Indigent Health and Housing offices.  Those two will remain at 126 Rosewood Avenue.

It’s Tuesday June 23rd

 

And it was on this date in 1845 that the Congress of the Republic of Texas voted to accept the joint resolution for annexation by the United States.  And it was 105 years ago today that the Medical Center for Veterans opened in Kerrville, established to serve the vets from World War 1 on land donated by the Scheiner family.

 

And born on this date in 1929 was June Carter Cash, and here in Boerne we say happy birthday to Keith Martin out in Pipe Creek at Madrona Ranch, Cindi Graeber, James Castro, and Nicole Smith.

And more summer fun - the Boerne Turn Verein has new summer hours with open bowling for everyone - on Monday’s it’s all day from 4 to 11, on Tue, Wed, and Thurs the leagues start at 6 so get in today at 4 and at 3 for the next two days, and weekend play starts at 2 and goes to 11.  The Boerne TurnVerein has been there since 1906 so the lanes are broken in…and fun fact you can see Ad Toepperwein's signature on the wall when the charter was written.

 

The Fair Oaks Ranch Municipal Court is partnering with their Police Department and the Texas A&M Agrilife Program to bring Reality Education for Drivers. RED is a free program with a goal to steer young drivers toward safer driving habits and away from possible citations while on the road. The deadline to sign up is the 24th-just email your full name and contact information to rbautista@fairoaksranchtx.org.

Boerne ISD recently announced their inductee class for the 2026 Hall of Honor Luncheon that will take place on October 2 at the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. The class inductees are the 2010-2011 Champion Boys Soccer Team, former Boerne ISD Coach Chuck Foster, former Champion Volleyball star Claire Kreuz, and longtime Champion Booster Club supporter Jeff Dabbs will receive the Bill Canavan Memorial Benefactor Award. 

Now an award for a Boerne Greyhound- last night, Camden Johnson and the Oklahoma Sooners became national champions in baseball as they beat North Carolina, 13-2. Johnson scored 1 hit in 4 at-bats, and in total, Oklahoma recorded 14 hits and 12 RBIs which are quite the stats in a clinching game. A big accomplishment for the former Hound, and for Boerne ISD Athletics. 

The first round of the NBA Draft is tonight, and trade drama is already happening. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks star the Spurs were in rumors about claiming this off season, was traded along with Bobby Portis to Miami in return for young guys and 3 first round picks. One being tonight… So in other words, the Spurs-Heat rivalry from 2014 could continue if they both reach the Finals. The Spurs need to get there first… so, what do they need this draft? Well, they seem to need a true power forward to assist Wemby in rebounding and defense. The Spurs have pick number 20 in the first round, and numbers 35, 42, and 44 in round 2, all via trades. If the draft isn’t the front office’s forte this time around, the Spurs do have some money to spend on free agents in the offseason. It’s hard to project who exactly on the board will be drafted tonight, so it might be a spur of the moment pick. No pun intended. It all starts tonight at 7 on ESPN.
