We are 20 days away from the start of the Boerne Coach’s Show debuting here on Boerne Radio! That’s right - if you haven’t heard by now, I’m hosting the Coach’s Show live from 28 Songs Brewhouse! We’ll talk to coaches every Wednesday and have a good time on the air live. I hope you’ll join us. 

Up the road in Comfort, the softball team will have a new softball coach. In a report from the Boerne Star, Alexia Perkkio has been hired as the new coach of the program, replacing Coach Hershey. Most recently, she hosted a softball camp at the school and will also serve as an assistant coach for the volleyball team. 

On the PGA Tour, the Genesis Scottish Open begins this morning with a purse of $9 million. Chris Gotterup, who won the tournament last year, is currently ranked 7th amongst golfers heading into this weekend. 

And the quarterfinals begin for the World Cup. France and Morocco will begin at 3pm to advance to the semifinals.

Counting down the days until high school football- Champion football will be one of those teams this year. 2025 was a great foundation but trust me when I say, it is the year of the Charger. Julian Navarette and Caleb Farias, are #4 on a list by Dave Campbell’s of the best duos in the upcoming year. With the leadership of these two, they made it to the regional round for the first time since 2019. They have quite the year coming up. 

Through one round of the Genesis Scottish Open, five players find themselves tied for first with a -5. There’s an eight-way tie for sixth place at -4, and a thirteen-way tie for third… you get the idea. Things are close across the pond. Round two continues today.

It’s Friday July 10th. 

And with our chance for rain today, we’ll only get up into the upper 80’s here in mid-July today was the date that officially recorded the highest temperature in American history…it was in Death Valley California and the high there was 134 degrees….and take a guess on the year…was it 2019, 2013, or 1996.  Lock in your answer…and answer is - you all lose…the correct answer is July 10th, 1913.

And on that happy note, happy birthday right here in the Hill Country to Faith Palmer, Chris Bellow over at Brevity Coffee, Linda Bannister, Michelle Ryan, Pam Wise of Wise Investment Services,  and Shawna Verrett at City Wide Home Mortgage.  

You all share a birthday with Soul Singer Mavis Staples who is 87, Arlo Guthrie is 79, and Jessica Simpson who was born in Abilene Texas turns 46 today.

Also happy birthday to our original news girl Tanya McMeans.  “It’s another Hot Day in Boerne” – How Hot? – It’s so hot when you buy a Tootie Pie, by the time you get home it’s perfectly baked.”

Heads up…if you’re in the Bentwood, Cibolo Crossing, or Moss Rose area, crews from Boerne Utilities will begin trimming trees starting on Monday. 

Brentwood is the area around Boerne High School, Cibolo Crossing is south of Johns Road, and Moss Rose is around 474 and South Esser.

Crews will work each day over a four-week stretch, weather permitting, to ensure tree limbs stay a safe distance from power lines.  McCoy Tree Surgery, the contractors responsible for the work, will notify you if and when crews will need to enter to access trees along the electric lines and will notify you about a week in advance by placing a tag on your front door.

This spring, the community gave feedback on the historic Boerne High School wall on Blanco and Esser Road, which has been deteriorating for a few years. Based on that feedback, and taking into account structural needs, long-term planning and budget, the District is proceeding with the stabilization and repair of the wall. Once the repairs are complete, Boerne Highschool students, whether current or alums, will come together to repaint the historic signs. 

Lots to do in Boerne this weekend as Market Days is back in Main Plaza, DeVino Cellars has a ribbon cutting at their new location today at 4, Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery is hosting their first Sound Sessions experience. Daniel Robinson starts at 2, and then at 5 it’s Three of A Kind featuring Konrad Wert, Clifton Fifer and Ashley Valero. The New York Times called Konrad Wert a “one man folk wonder”.  He’s good with a banjo, guitar, fiddle, and stomp box.  Texas Treasures Fine Art Gallery is on Main Street and Rosewood.

The Bergheim Fire department was dispatched early yesterday morning when smoke was spotted on the 200 block of FM 3351. By 6 a.m., fire crews were on the scene with the Kendall County Office of Emergency Management and TCEQ. There was no threat to the public, and crews cleared the area a little after 9.

It’s Thursday, July 9th. 

 

After the declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, edited by John Adams’ Committee of Five, signed by representatives from 13 states, copies were made and it was on this date in 1776 - The Declaration of Independence is read to George Washington’s troops in New York.  

 

And happy birthday to Jerri Remrey and Matt Gose here in Boerne, you share your birthday with Courtney Love who is 62, Jack White is 51, Jim Kerr from Simple Minds is 67,and the late Bon Scott of ACDC was born on this date in 1946. 

 

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a resident in the Bent Tree Subdivision early yesterday morning at 4:55. The suspect, later identified as Austin Hodo, was standing in the roadway wearing only underwear and discharging a handgun. According to authorities, Hodo shot in the direction of the 911 caller, and later advanced toward deputies with his firearm raised and fired. Hodo was struck by gunfire and pronounced deceased at the scene-no deputies were injured and the investigation is ongoing. 

 

In the last month Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, and Robert Earl Keen played Whitewater Amphitheater, and later this month Randy Rogers Band, Flatland Cavalry and Dwight Yoakam are still scheduled to perform…however earlier this week Whitewater has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and under their specific filing, they may be able to temporarily halt foreclosure and other collection efforts. In a statement, Whitewater described the filing as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the business while continuing normal operations. 

 

The roof of Water Plant 5 was placed last week in Fair Oaks Ranch, almost completing the 500,000 gallon tank. The next steps will be sandblasting and painting the sides, which should be completed by the fall of this year. Once finished, the tank will provide additional water storage and pumping capacity for zones A and B, which help strengthen the water supply for the entire city. 

 

The big news in Comfort this week are the winners of the Pie Contest from the 4th of July - congrats to Doris Kriss your first-place winner with her San Saba Pecan Pie. IN 2nd and 3rd was Margaret Winkler and Cathy Winkler…small town…and your Honorable Mention with here Peach and Honey Pie from your Boerne Chamber is Steely Lott Sorbel.  Way to go Steely.
