Greyhound softball had a player commit to a college, announced yesterday on social media. Lizzy Thornton has committed to Cisco College out of Cisco, Texas just west of Fort Worth. And we are still a few weeks away from baseball and softball starting, but practices are to begin soon. 

Speaking of, college football playoffs are currently happening and NFL playoffs kick off this weekend. But after the Super Bowl, Major League catchers and pitchers report for spring training. The Astros signed a Pacific League prospect from Japan- Tatsuya Imai signed this week to Houston. In his previous league, he had an ERA of 3.15 and was 58-45 in 8 seasons. 

The Spurs avenge themselves with a home win over the Lakers, 107-91. Keldon Johnson had 27 points.

It’s Thursday January 8th. 

 

And some big Boerne Radio artists were born on this date starting with the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley born in 1935, David Bowie was born in 1947, and Robby Krieger  - surviving member of the Doors turns 80 today.  And some more Boerne Rock Stars celebrating a birthday - Ellie Maxwell who’s with a great non-profit called 1 Hope for Kids, MS Warrior Lauren Blacklock, and Hunter Beaton - the founder of another powerful non-profit called Day 1 Bags.  Happy Birthday indeed.

 

Tomorrow morning you will notice that the area around Champion High School has a few more law enforcement officers and first responders than their typical SROs. This increased activity is part of a planned scenario-based training exercise.  The program is called Campus Guardian Angel which is a drone-based school safety system partnering the police with a school campus to confront and degrade active shooter threats.   City Park and surrounding roadways will be closed prior to and during the training.

 

The Boerne Star spoke with Fire Marshall Brady Constantine to get the breakdown on any emergencies on New Year’s Eve. There were no major incidents that night, and only 6 total fires that were quickly put out. All departments were fully staffed and worked well into the night, but didn’t see much action. 

And some more winners from the Kendall County Jr. Livestock Show. Trent Berny took the crown for Champion Market Steer exihibitor. Yesterday sheep and goats were presented, and Penny Weldon was named Champion Wether Doe Exhibitor, Rosalinn Kneupper won it for the Angora Goat category, Riley Kidder is your Champion Commercial Ewe Lamb exhibitor, and Will Thomason is the Reserves Commercial Ewe exhibitor.

And born on this date 226 years ago in the year 1800 was the 13th President of the United States - Millard Fillmore. 

And looking at the Boerne Radio Birthday Calendar happy birthday to Mandy Jones out on the Jones Christmas Ranch…Mr. Rod Townsend with Go Heeled Firearms Training, and Mr. Ryan Sanders.  If today is your birthday, you share it with Kenny Logins who turns 77, and Kathy Valentine bass player for the Go Go’s is 66. 

 

The Kendall County Jr Livestock Show is taking place this week, and there are plenty of young cowpokes looking to show off their prized animals. So far they have crowned Avery Woerner as the Grand Champion Turkey exhibitor, Addison Scott as Champion Market Hog exhibitor, and Lillie Vogt for Champion Breeding Heifer exhibitor…and here’s what’s next for Lillie…

Today the sheep and goats are showcased, and of course it closes out at the end with the big auction.

 

The major developer, Lennar Homes, has pulled it’s application for it’s subdivision that would have been built in Comfort. The national home builder rescinded its application from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and their plan to build an 1100-home neighborhood over just 580 acres. Comfort residents pushed backed when they learned the project would have dumped 600,000 gallons of treated sewer water into local creeks, which would flow directly into the Trinity aquifer.  Power to the people. 

 

If one of your resolutions this new year was to volunteer more, City of Boerne has some ideas.  Take advantage of your wellness by utilizing our beautiful Boerne parks and trails, or sign up for a league through Boerne Parks and Rec. Get a library card and start that book you’ve been meaning to, or rent a movie! And get involved in local government by witnessing a City Council meeting…the first meeting of 2026 is next Tuesday.

Headlines: two more Geneva players earn honors / Spurs lose, take on LAL in back-to-back

Boerne Radio Sports!

Two more Geneva football players earned honors. Shae McNew played both defense and offense this year. He earned 1st team all district for his running back role, 2nd team all state for the same position, and 2nd team all district as a linebacker. Mikhail Boespflug earned 1st team all district and honorable mention all state as an offensive lineman. 

The Spurs lost a close one to Memphis, 106-105. They’re back home in San Antonio to take on the Lakers tonight. Spurs are #2 in the west and the Lakers are #3. Tip-off is at 8:30 because of the national TV schedule.
