Football, football, football! 

It’s Friday- and our football coverage starts tonight here on Boerne Radio! Our live game of the week will be the Boerne Champion Chargers taking on Smithson Valley… pregame will start at 6:30, but as you well know, we start the party at 5 with ‘Fired Up Friday’- the players will DJ the music before kickoff. Then for your ride home, we will replay the Greyhounds vs East Central homecoming game. It’s all tonight - right here- on Boerne Radio, the Boerne Radio App, and at BoerneRadio.com.

For the Geneva Eagles, they will be at KIPP Sunnyside tonight at 6:30. Our friends in Comfort will be at Johnson City tonight at 7.

Boerne Radio Sports - September 20, 2024

Next to Main Plaza is a hotel that has both Texas and National Landmark designations … the story of The Kendall right after this …

The Kendall has had several names and owners since 1859.  It started when Erastus and Sarah Reed from Georgia purchased the land from John James for $200.  They built the center section as their home.  They began renting out the 4 spare rooms to stagecoach travelers and horsemen, as the inns grounds served as a wagon yard for ranchers.

Then it was called the Reed House, then the King Place when Col. Henry C. King took over.  Next owners J.C. Rountree and W.L. Wadsworth turned it into the Boerne Hotel.  In 1909, Dr. Barnitz renamed it Ye Kendall Inn and added electrical wiring and community bathrooms.  Today The Kendall is one of the few remaining 19th Century Resort Hotels in Texas.

Not long after the Civil War, a young deacon came to the Hill Country to establish Boerne’s first church, but the free thinking founding fathers said you’re going to have to built that thing outside of town on the other side of the Cibolo.   The story of St. Peter’s Catholic Church right after this.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church held its first Mass in 1867, led by Father Emil Fleury.  The small limestone chapel was built with physical and financial help from parishioners including Kendall, Phillips, Staffel, Dienger, Sultenfuss, and O'Grady. 

In 1923 a larger church was built next door in the classic Spanish Mission style with the help of the Kronkosky Family.  Father Fleury who started St. Peters as a young man, helped lay the cornerstone at the age of 80.

Boerne Texas History -118 - St Peter's Catholic Church

Boerne’s original cherry wood and mahogany bar has moved up and down Main Street for over 150 years … the story of the Max Beseler Bar after this …

The second oldest bar in Texas was first housed in a saloon built by August Staffle in 1869.  20 years later,  Max Beseler’s Metropolitan Saloon opened with that bar where the Black Rifle and the Chamber of Commerce now reside.  During Prohibition, Max moved the bar next door to what is now home of the Daily Grind where it was used to serve ice cream and pickled eggs until 1974.  After a brief stay in the Dienger, the bar was moved to the 2nd floor of Boerne’s Frost Bank. This historic bar is now at its forever home in The Richter Tavern at 153 Main - home of the Beseler Flip cocktail in Beseler’s honor… who flipped drinks behind this bar for 50 years.
