We talked about Champion volleyball last night clinching their playoff spot- well, now some recognition off the court… Ella Coleman and Samantha Calderon have received the AVCA Best and Brightest Award which acknowledges athletes for their academic work, service off the court as well as on… way to go! 

TONIGHT- we have a special Thursday edition of high school football… The Chargers will head to San Antonio Wagner for a Halloween night showdown and a battle for a playoff spot against one of the toughest teams in the district. No tricks- all treats… It will all start tonight at 6:30 here on Boerne Radio with the pregame show. 

The Spurs played OKC last night, and lost 105-93. Tonight they’ll be in Utah to take on the Jazz.

Boerne Radio - Sports - October 31, 2024

It’s Thursday October 31st. 

And it’s Halloween. Or All Hallows’ Eve - Eve to All Saint’s Day which has a bunch of other names = the Feast of All Saints, Feast of All Hallows, and Hallowmas…a day to remember the dead, including saints, martyrs, and all the faithfully departed…a tradition that goes back centuries, and today, Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday next to Christmas projecting to do 11.6 billion dollars this year.

Yesterday the Boerne Star reported a tragedy…three members of the Waid family from Pipe Creek have died in a head on collision on Highway 46 5 miles west of Boerne. A witness called 911 at 7:46pm to report a Ford pickup truck passing other vehicles on the two lane road when he collided with the family in their lane. The driver of the truck was rushed to a San Antonio Hospital, while police tried to rescue the family trapped inside their Corolla. Over the next hour, all three family members, including the 14 year old daughter, passed from their injuries. They leave behind a son, Barrett Waid, who is a baseball player at Schreiner University. His team has set up a Gofundme page to help immediate expenses and relief for him. We have posted a direct link in the news blog at boerneradio.com.

During this drought, as Boerne Lake levels have been lowering, The Boerne Parks and Rec department took the opportunity to clean up some of the exposed new shoreline effectively removing over 200 tires over a 3 day period.  They were placed in the lake with good intentions back in the 80s to provide habitats for the fish to breed and hide.  In recent years the City of Boerne has installed steel fishing habitats designed and constructed by welding students at Champion High School. 

The Walmart in Boerne just donated two massive coolers to Hill Country Family Services. The organization will now be able to hold milk, eggs and other perishables that they will be able to give to families in need. Now here’s the fun part: they are hosting a competition to name their new fridge! Board President Burt Grabo will select the winner, and if it’s you, your name will be engraved on a plaque that will be attached to the cooler! You can post your cool name in the comments section on Hill Country Family Services most recent Facebook post.

The Greyhound volleyball team closed out their season last night at home, against a team that is destined for the playoffs. In 5 sets, Boerne pulled it out over New Braunfels to prompt a joyous celebration that also involved the Champion Charger players who stormed the court to celebrate their hometown district counterparts  in their final game of the season- we love the sisterhood between the two teams… The Chargers completed their 3rd-consecutive sweep against Tivy who is 5th in the district… and the Chargers have clinched a playoff spot with that win. They finish 34-7 and 13-3 in district… another amazing season… and now we just wait for their bi-district round opponent.

Speaking of district, playoff implications, and season endings… we have a special Thursday edition of high school football… The Chargers will head to San Antonio Wagner for a Halloween night showdown and a battle for a playoff spot against one of the toughest teams in the district. It will all start tomorrow at 6:30 here on Boerne Radio with the pregame show.

And born on this date in 1735 - John Adams - the first US Vice President and 2nd President of the United States.  He was also the father of the 6th president John Quincy Adams.  Also born 204 years later was Grace Barnett Wing better known as Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane…er…better known as Jefferson Starship…er…Starship.  As John Adams was a founding father of this country….Grace Slick helped build this city…

Okay dear Boerne Radio listeners - I have a story for you, yesterday I got to meet Hailey Johndrow - a high school senior here in Boerne, she was the Kendall County Fair Queen last year, and Duchess the year before. and I want you to hear a little bit more about Hailey…and here’s Hailey…

So here’s the rough patch - when Hailey was 6 her kidneys stopped growing and a transplant has always been on the horizon, and her doctors are saying the time is now. Kidney Disease leads to unclean blood, which makes you itchy, with severe headaches, and the brain fog is real.

On November 11th she will turn 18,

Her mom Lara who’s a teacher at St. John Lutheran School says the need is not writing a check…

Well there ain’t no rest for our first responders here in Kendall County, especially if you find yourself patrolling Highway 46 or 87. Yesterday morning, first responders were called to the 500 block of 87 North near Kendall Falls because of an 18 Wheeler engulfed in flames. After fire fighters put out the blaze, the Highway was able to fully reopen.
