We first want to send our congratulations to Coach Chelsea Goff, as now she is Coach Colvard! She got married recently. She is an assistant volleyball and girls assistant basketball coach at Champion. 

Happening today: Geneva will be hosting their annual Hill Country Classic Basketball Tournament through tomorrow. San Antonio Christian and Castle Hills will start the tournament at 10 this morning. The Geneva boys will get the 11:15 tip off against Frassati, and then play Covenant at 4:15. The girls will play Frassati first at 12:30 and then St. Pius at 3.

If you’re a BYU fan, the Alamo Bowl was your forte… they defeated Colorado 36-14 at the Alamodome Saturday in front of a sold out 64,261 people. 

The Spurs lose another close, tough game- 112-110 the final against Minnesota. They’re back home tomorrow night for a New Year’s Eve game against the Clippers at 6.

Headlines:Geneva senior sets school record/Peach Bowl Game/Spurs record

2 days into 2025, and Senior Geneva Basketball star Wyatt Bruss finished 2024 with a record-setting performance during the Hill Country Classic. He set the school record during the game against FEAST in which he scored 47 points and made 13 threes in the game… by my calculations that’s 39 of those points just off threes… phonomenal numbers for the senior and for the program. Wow! 

The Longhorns of UT ‘hooked’ the Sun Devils of Arizona State in the Peach Bowl yesterday. A game that came down to overtime and ended off an interception by UT Austin, was a nail-biter but the Longhorns advance by a score of 39-31. They will now face Ohio State next Friday in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, for a chance to advance to the College Football National Championship.

The Spurs are now 17-16 after closing out the year dominating the Clippers… now they open 2025 in Denver when they face the Nuggets tonight at 8.

Headlines: L. Ron Hubbard Golden Brush Award/Bird Flu developing/Chamber of Commerce Executives 40 under 40

It’s Thursday January 2nd. 

And it was on this date in 1974 that President Richard Nixon signed a bill requiring all states to lower the speed limit to 55 miles per hour.  It was intended to save gas supplies during an embargo imposed by Arab oil-producing countries.  

Federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.  The highest speed limit in the country is 85 mph on Highway 130 which is the toll road around Austin.

If you missed the Wednesday edition of the Boerne Star, here are some of the top stories. A Boerne native and Champion graduate will be traveling to Hollywood in April to compete for the Illustrator of the Future Award. Jordan Smajstrla, who is now a Senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, will now compete with 11 other illustrators for the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Brush Award and $5,000 cash prize. She’ll attend workshops with some of the genre’s top names in writing and illustrating, all coming just a few months before her graduation and leap into the “working world” of illustration.

Also posted in the Boerne Star was information about a new Bird Flu developing in the state. The National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and disease experts indicate that HPAI is circulating among wild birds in Texas as waterbirds and waterfowl are on their wintering grounds. Bird feeders and water sources should be cleaned at least every two weeks with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water, and bird baths should be cleaned every few days. 

And the President and CEO of the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce has been named one of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives 40 under 40. The ACCE recognizes the top emerging leaders in the chamber industry who have demonstrated remarkable success in their careers and made a lasting impact on their communities. Kim Blohm is a shining example of creativity, dedication, and innovative leadership that’s shaping the future of our profession.

Headlines:Funeral held for School Teacher/Felonies For Robbers/No trash pickup 

It’s Wednesday - January 1st - the first day of 2025

Can you believe it…

January 1st was declared a national holiday by Julius Caesar in the year 46 B.C. This came as an addition to his new Julian Calendar, which was in use until Pope Gregory replaced it with his Gregorian Calendar in 1582. Today remains January 1, in the year of our Lord 2025.

 A funeral was held on Sunday for the School Teacher who was killed in the accident two weeks ago at the Excelled Montessori School. 22 year old Alexia Rosales passed away after a vehicle crashed into another in the schools parking lot, crashing into a fence that also injured 5 children. According to police, one child still remains in the hospital in critical condition, and the woman who caused the crash suffered a medical episode which led to the tragedy. 

Continued prayers for them.

Well…they made off with $100 by holding up a Dominoes with a BB Gun and now face felonies and bonds set at $313,000 to the male, and $100,000 for the female.  Charges for Kenneth Davis include aggravated robbery, drug possession, tampering and fabricating evidence with intent to impair…allegedly.  Victoria Jan McDonald is only charged with aggravated robbery…allegedly…yet still a felony.  That means a minimum fine of $10,000 in Texas and 5 to 99 years in prison.   The lesson here kids is don’t do drugs.  And today’s a good day to order a Pizza from your local Boerne Dominoes on Main Street. 

Just a reminder that there is no trash pickup today since it is a holiday, so make sure to leave your bin out one day later than you usually do. Even if your trash day is on Friday, Boerne Utilities will swing by on Saturday to pick up your bin.
