Barktoberfest – This Saturday in Main Plaza

Boerne Radio News is delivered to you by The Boerne Star….and by The Hill Country Animal League as the 6th annual Barktoberfest is this Saturday in Main Plaza from 10-4.  Bring the kids, bring the pets, as there will be a petting zoo,  the doggy dash, costume contest featuring your pets for prizes, a silent auction, food trucks, and if you don’t have a doggie, you may end up leaving with one as pet adoptions will also be on site, and it all supports your low cost spay and neutering friends at Hill Country Animal League.

It’s Monday October 12th.

And it’s Columbus Day - always the 2nd Monday of October - Federal offices and banks are closed today, and schools are out one more day.  The day remembers when Christopher Columbus when ashore at Gauanahani, an island in the Bahamas on October 12th 1492 after sailing the ocean blue.  The holiday is recognized here, in Spain and Italy who calls him by his real name Christoforo Colombo.

This Wednesday is the Boerne Senior Expo in the Menger Ballroom at the Bevy Hotel. This free event is from 9 to 3, and helps connect seniors with essential resources in the Boerne area like health services, financial planning and community programs. Here’s founder and organizer Robyn Cade with the RJC Event Group:

Admission for the 55 and up senior expo is free, and they will not be checking IDs at the door, and make sure you swing by the Boerne Radio Table - we’d love to record your shout out.  See you Wednesday from 9-3 at the Bevy for the Boerne Senior Expo.

The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees was named the 2026 TASA Outstanding School Board over the weekend. This is the highest honor in the Texas Association of School Administrators’ School Board Awards program.

The Boerne Star reported on Sunday that applications are open for an estimated $31 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission. Nonprofit organizations and local government agencies that provide direct services to veterans may apply now through December 2nd. The grant term for the 2028 funding period is 24 months, and awards can range from $50,000 to a maximum of $600,000.

The numbers are in from the Boerne Book Festival-the annual festival celebrated its 10th anniversary by welcoming 1,600 guests throughout the day. This was a 45% increase from last year, and the library bookshop saw a 21% increase in revenue compared to last year. Additionally the festival donated 700 copies of New Dragon City to Currington and Kendall Elementary schools.
