It’s Friday August 7th.
And it’s National Purple Heart Day honoring U.S. service members who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in our military.
It stands as the oldest military decoration still given to U.S. service members as General George Washington created the original award, the Badge of Military Merit, on August 7, 1782.
It became The Purple Heart on February 22, 1932 during the bicentennial of Washington’s birth.
And today at Compadres Hill Country Cocina, Keg 1 O’Neal says to Purple Heart Veterans your Compadres Pulled Pork Sandwich, Lays Classic Chips and Drink is on them. Compadres is open today from 11-2 on Loman Street. If you pop in today just to support, thank that Hill Country Veteran the best way you can.
Superintendent Dr. Kristin Craft was recognized as one of the Top Women in Leadership by the San Antonio Business Journal. The awards ceremony highlighted women across the greater San Antonio Area who exemplified vision and success in their field. The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees was also recognized by the Texas Association of School Administrators as one of this year’s Honor School Boards.
Kendall Elementary got a new refrigerator for the teacher’s break room thanks to the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce. They spread the word, but Hill Country Family Services made it happen.
It’s the last weekend of summer vacation before the first day of school for the kids, and our new traffic rhythms…and here are the top three last hurrahs happening this weekend. The Parks and Rec’s Final Movie at the Pool is tonight featuring Little Giants, Family Night Hike at the Cibolo Nature Center is also tonight. And again tomorrow morning is the live Raptor demonstration at Wild Birds Unlimited.
If you’re empty-nesters, Market Days is back this weekend, the Sisterdale VFD BBQ and Dance is Saturday night, and Cibolo Creek Brewing is hosting their 10th Anniversary Party on Sunday.
Privacy concerns surrounding license-plate-reading cameras are gaining attention in Kendall County. A petition calling for the removal of Flock Safety cameras around Boerne had collected nearly 900 signatures. Kendall County Commissioner Chad Carpenter, who initially supported the county’s contract, now says he has concerns about privacy and how collected information could potentially be used.
Tomorrow afternoon Boerne Radio’s Sonny Melendrez will be Emceeing the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame Class of 2026 where Boerne Radio’s Production Manager Roland J. Ruiz will be inducted. Roland is also your arena announcer for the Spurs, the Missions, the Gunslingers, and more. Also being inducted are many that I have had the honor to work with including Henrietta Hernandez AKA Hot Henrietta, LA Loyd from my KISS days, the late great Ruben O Garcia, Magic Sales Queen Pam Board Kinney, and another dear friend Milton Glueck. Mark Grubbs is also finally making it in as the retired owner of the Ranch Radio Group in Kerrville. With Roland’s entrance to the Hall of Fame, that will make 3 Hall of Famers serving you on Boerne Radio. (I thinks what the kids call a “flex”)
