It’s Monday August 24th.

It was on this date in 1932 Amelia Earhart flew nonstop from Coast to Coast, becoming the first woman to do so in a whopping 19 hrs and 5 minutes, Amelia flew from LA to Newark. Also on this date, the waffle iron earned its patent in 1869 probably by a dad.

And today we say happy birthday to Amber Clark and Delise Baker here in Boerne.  They share their birthday with Mason Williams who is 88 today.  He’s famous for his instrumental track Classical Gas, he was also a writer for Saturday Night Live…and he was born in Abilene, Texas.

And with baseball on everyone’s mind in Boerne, it was on this date in 1989 that baseball legend Pete Rose was banned for life from baseball.  However Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred removed him from the permanently ineligible list from the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  He will be first up for consideration in December of 2027.

So here’s the deal…The Boerne Little League Team has a path.  And Manager Greg Yost says this team knows something about bouncing back.

Remember, Boerne also lost its first game at the Southwest Regional before fighting all the way back to win the championship.

Both Boerne High School and Champion High School have been named among the best high schools in America by U.S. News and World Report.  Champion ranks 157th in Texas and 1,211th nationally, while Boerne High comes in at 210th in Texas and 1,664th in the nation.  The rankings look at college readiness, graduation rates, state testing and the depth of college-level coursework.  There are roughly 2300 High Schools in Texas.

Boerne ISD also continues to boast a graduation rate above 99 percent.

Some Bergheim homeowners could see an insurance benefit thanks to improvements at the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department. The department’s fire protection rating has jumped from an ISO 8 to a 4/4X, reflecting years of investment in training, equipment, staffing, water supply and emergency communications. The rating can be a factor in determining property insurance premiums. Residents served by Bergheim VFD are encouraged to contact their insurance company to see if the improved rating could lower their costs. 

Kendall County residents are being urged to stay wildfire-aware as Texas moves into the late-summer fire season. The Texas A&M Forest Service reports increased wildfire activity as hot, dry weather quickly dries vegetation. Residents should avoid activities that create sparks, keep vehicles off dry grass, clear combustible materials from around homes, and check local burn restrictions. Officials also recommend having multiple ways to receive emergency alerts and being ready to evacuate if necessary. As of April 7th there is no burn ban, but the Commissioner's Court could reinstate it at any time.
