Headlines: 59th Anniversary of the UT Austin Tower Shooting with a Boerne Connection / Al Frugoni in Boerne Grilling For Charity / Boerne Bier-Fest Cancelled / F.O.R. Committee Deadline is Today / Staycation Winner Picked Today
It's Friday August 1st.
Lots of notable events happened on this date in history…the discovery of oxygen by Joseph Priestly in 1774, slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834, the 1936 Summer Olympics opened in Berlin presided by that schrankly crankily guy, in 1966 that horrible shooting from the tower at the University of Texas in Austin…and if you see any video footage of that day was taken by a friend of mine, Mr. Bob Carnes who is a resident of Boerne.
And MTV debuted on this date in 1981 and most everyone knows the first song played which was Video Killed the Radio Star. How ironic that MTV is pretty much gonzo and you’re hearing this on the radio. Do you know the 2nd song played on MTV? She brags it was the first guitar song on MTV - she being Pat Benatar with You Better Run which was a cover of the Young Rascals from 1966.
Lots of events going on all across the Hill Country this weekend and next week - the one a lot of folks are excited about is Al Frugoni is hosting an event in Boerne on Sunday…and if you just said Who? Al Frugoni is the Mr. Open Fire Cooking monster…the Argentinean Pitmaster based here in Texas - Fair Oaks Ranch in fact…he has 1.6 million followers on TikTok - and if you just said ‘what’s TikTok = don’t worry - we still got you…He’ll be at a special event called Texas Spirit Flood Relief Benefit at the Random Beer Garden on Upper Cibolo Creek Road, and besides amazing BBQ, there will be live music, a petting zoo, live and silent auctions, and all you can eat Bar B Q for just $25 for adults, and kids under 12 are free. Get your ticket at texasspirit.org/event/4th-of-july-flooding-benefit/
Something that’s not happening this year is the Boerne Bierfest! Shan and I were going to MC it…bummer…yeah the hill Country Council for the Arts leader Rob Siegler said it’s about the bottom line - and it hurt to cancel but the Home Brew Competition will continue with a site TBD. More details in the Boerne Star.
Today is the last day to apply for city boards and committees in Fair Oaks Ranch. The City is currently looking to fill 14 open positions including some fun ones like Planning and Zoning (woo hoo), Transportation Satefty Advisory Committee, and Capital Improvement Advisory Committee. Your application must be in by 5pm. You can send in your application at fairoaksranchtx.org/286/committees.
