The Boerne ISD School Board has announced the official new boundaries for the brand-new Viola Wilson Elementary School alleviating the stress on Fabra, Kendall and Van Raub Elementary. Wilson will open its doors in the Fall,  and students that are in the 5th grade and their siblings will be able to be grandfathered into their current elementary school for one year, but these students will be responsible for their own transportation. 

If you love the Hill Country, love native plants, bird watching, and nature in general,  The Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter is seeking applicants for its upcoming training class for new members.  The training curriculum begins in August with 12 weeks of Wednesday evening lectures and 8 Saturday field trips. The Texas Master Naturalist mission is to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to provide EDUCATION, OUTREACH, and SERVICE dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within our communities for the State of Texas.  Learn more at txmn.org/hillcountry.

By the way, the spring native plant sale is open to the public this Saturday from 9 to 1 at the Herff Farm Teaching Barn on Herff Road. 

And if you volunteer anywhere…at your church, your neighborhood, your school, or for a non-profit…this Friday is Volunteer Appreciation Day with Mayor Frank Richie at Boerne City Hall.  Hot coffee and donuts will be provided from 8 to 9 thanks to the Black Rifle and with the why here’s Staci Almager with Hill Country Family Services.

And it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, National Military Appreciation Month, and National Foster Care Month.  Today also begins National Teacher Appreciation Week, and a quick reminder that Mother’s Day is on the 12th so don’t blow it and register to win the Mother’s Day contest at boerneradio.com.

Tomorrow you are invited to meet in Main Plaza for the National Day of Prayer celebration.  The Ceremony officially begins at noon after the blowing of the Shofar, and the posting of the colors.  Pastor Ruben Mendez will welcome all and pray over our Leaders, The Governor's proclamation will be read by State Representative Ellen Troxclair, the County Judge’s Proclamation by Shane Stolarczyk, the mayor’s Proclamation by Frank Ritchie, prayers for county leaders from Country Commissioner Andra Wisian, all in authority from Kyle Biedermann, prayers for law enforcement from Sheriff Al Auxier, and others praying over our churches, our families, our youth, our businesses, and prayers for the media which they are let yours truely take that one.  We’ll see you in the Main Plaza tomorrow at noon for the National Day of Prayer.

And a sad post by George Strait last night where he said - quote:

We lost another one of our good friends and a huge part of our musical journey yesterday. Tom Foote, our one-time drummer and long-time road manager for around 48 years, suddenly passed away at his home after our rehearsal. 2024 is taking its toll on the Ace in the Hole group. We’re all heartbroken to say the least.

Back in March, George Strait’s business manager Erv Woolsey passed away, as did long time fiddle and mandolin player for the Ace in the Hole Band, Gene Elders.

It’s Tuesday April 30th. 

And today is Adopt a Shelter Pet Day.

Adoption of course is the goal but animal shelters also need volunteers to help the animals exercise, socialize, and share that wonderful feeling called love. Before showing up...check with the shelter first as some are still on an appointment basis only.  That includes Boerne Animal Control, and Heart of Texas SPCA at Fair Oaks Ranch. 

Also yesterday was Willie Nelson’s 91st, but he also claims April 30th as the Hill County Courthouse in Abbott Texas didn’t record his birth until the next day.

There were three major accidents on I-10 yesterday, with two of them causing a closure of the Eastbound lanes from marker 522-524.  Later at about 3:45pm, eastbound I-10 was closed again, this time near John’s Road. The wrecks themselves involved multiple cars, Kendall County's finest were on the scene quickly, and the areas were cleared by 5:45. 

I understand Boerne Traffic Director Dusty Rhodes is also up by Johns Road right now with a new development.  Come in Dusty.

And looking ahead to this weekend, the Boerne Fire Department on Main Street is hosting their 3rd annual Spring Open House. From 10 to 2 on Saturday they will be firing up hot dogs on the grill, giving live demonstrations and even giving tours of the trucks so bring the kids, and the kid in you.  

A couple months back The Boerne High School Marching band competed in the For Whom The Bell Tolls Competition. The Metallica themed event had some stiff competition, sad but true, but the Greyhounds tied for first with Malverne High School from New York State. And the day they thought would never come has come…the bell has indeed paid the toll…the $15000 check has come in this week for brand new band equipment.  Nothing else matters…and a great memory remains.  Bonus points for all the Boerne Radio Metalheads out there can tell me how many Metallica songs were referenced in this story.
