The Eastern Cape has marked a major milestone in public healthcare with the launch of its first public In Vitro Fertilisation, or IVF, Clinic at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha earlier
this month.
This development makes the province the fourth in South Africa to offer IVF services in the public sector and establishes the facility as the country’s fifth public IVF clinic. Importantly, the service is based at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital — the only central hospital in the Eastern Cape and one of just ten central hospitals nationwide — which serves more than 3.6 million people, many from rural and historically underserved communities.
To get more on this we are joined on the line by Dr Vulikhaya Mpumlwana, Gynaecologist and IVF specialist at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.
