When you hear the word disabled, what image conjures up in your mind? Someone in a wheelchair? Somebody physically restricted? An old person? Someone you automatically judge as being unable to communicate or incapable of achievement in other areas of life. That’s not always the case.

There are also many people with disabilities we can’t see. Things hidden beneath clothing, behind brave masks, disclosed through fear of being discovered and labelled or ignored, judged or categorised as somebody unable to contribute to society in ways we’re used to.

Do you think that’s fair?

Rose Keeping recently completed the Bay FM Radio Broadcast Course and is a 67-year-old vibrant, joyous, determined lady who wants to see a change in the way society views those living with any form of disability. She'd like people to look beyond the obvious physical signs to see the person inside. The human.

Rose is facing her recent diagnosis of CIDP Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy head and in doing so hopes to create change in the way people with disabilities are seen and treated.

WOW: Wise Older Women Positive Ageing Segment made possible with the support of the CBF Community Broadcasting Foundation. CBF.org.
