Iran may have averted US strikes for now by pledging not to execute protesters after pressure from President Donald Trump.

Trump told reporters Wednesday he had been informed the “killing in Iran is stopping,” adding he would be “very upset” if the crackdown continued. That was a marked shift from earlier in the week, when he urged Iranians to keep demonstrating and vowed that “help is on the way.”

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado met President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday as part of her push for greater influence in the wake of Nicolas Maduro’s ouster at the hands of American troops.

Trump was expecting a “good and positive discussion” with Machado, who “is really a remarkable and brave voice for many of the people of Venezuela,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
