Mindfulness Is Not Meditation

View descriptionShare

In this 116th episode of the Soberhead Podcast Harvard psychologist Dr. Ellen Langer, often called the mother of mindfulness and positive psychology, explains why mindfulness is not simply meditation or stress reduction.

For Dr. Langer, mindfulness means actively noticing new things, questioning fixed labels, and opening the mind to possibility. We discuss her legendary Counterclockwise Study, where older men were immersed in a younger version of their lives and showed improvements in strength, memory, posture, flexibility, hearing, vision, and even appearance.

Dr. Langer explains the concept of mind-body unity: the idea that the mind and body are not separate systems, but one. We explore what this means for aging, chronic illness, addiction, stress, recovery, and the labels we unconsciously accept: “old,” “sick,” “addicted,” “anxious,” or “powerless.”
