Joy grew up on a beef cattle farm, enrolled in a city high school and moved states to study music at tertiary level. Then she discovered the harp. After playing in professional orchestras, at weddings and events in picturesque locations and in 5 star hotels, Joy also offers harp sessions for stress reduction and vibrational healing, focussing on youth. For over 35 years she has guided students of all ages on their musical journey with piano and harp.  She has radio programming and presenting experience, and has given devoted administration support to both arts and educational organisations in Queensland.

Joy has 3 adult children and has a passion for travel, nutrition, poetry, permaculture and tiny house living.

"Remnants" is an exhibition of installation, assemblage and mixed media works by Oak Beach artist Jill Chism. Selected existing works will be presented in dialogue with new works, contextualising Jill’s career as an artist working in Far North Queensland since the early 1990s. Rather than a dystopian view of the planet, Chism’s material investigations question our inevitable relationship with what remains of the natural world. Chism offers another, existential possibility of moving away from the cultural trance of separateness and materialism, towards an understanding of our connectedness, to each other and the cosmos.

This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, provided through Regional Arts Australia and administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance. Additionally it received support from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) with Douglas Shire Council. NorthSite Contemporary Arts is assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. Yalanji culture informs my knowledge of our traditional stories and lifestyle and I use contemporary means to express my ideas. Kuku Yalanji people feel a deep connection to their traditional lands (Bubu). We find harmony and a place of belonging when out on our Bubu. This is our way of healing. It is our Lore.

PITA LOLOMA is a graduate with Bachelors of Science in Fisheries, worked with Government and NGOs in collaboration with Community Awareness for coastal communities on climate change and conservation and restoration of environment. The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation supporting development in the Pacific region. SPC is proud to be applying our collective capabilities in science, knowledge and innovation to serve the people of the Pacific in reaching their sustainable development goals and aspirations. By placing Pacific people at the centre of our approaches, and with our deep understanding of Blue Pacific contexts and worldviews, we embark on the journey to implement the Strategic Plan 2022 – 2031 that encompasses the insights and foresight of our members, staff and key stakeholders. It builds on learning from our previous plans and aligns with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. We have a strong comparative advantage in being able to bring a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing some of the region’s most complex development challenges, Resilience and climate action, natural resources and biodiversity, food systems, equity, education and social development, sustainable economies and livelihoods, planetary health and transforming institutional effectiveness. We recognise that our programmes and services need to consider the changing development landscape at national, regional and global levels. Habitat for Humanity New Zealand is a part of Habitat for Humanity an international not-for-profit organisation which began in the United States in 1976. As a registered Community Housing Provider and Charity, Habitat is committed to improvinghousing outcomes in New Zealand, the Pacific and Nepal. Habitat is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Katrina Ma’u Fatiaki has more than 15 years of training, research, evaluation, and program management experience in the Pacific. Currently the owner and lead consultant for Tapuaki Mei Langi Consultancy based in Tonga with core services in human rights and gender project design and delivery support. Former Senior Development Program Coordinator for the Aid Program of the New Zealand High Commission in Tonga, and a Human Rights officer at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community Regional Rights Resource Team (SPC RRRT). Strengths are in human rights and gender program management. A certified trainer, coach, and speaker in the field of leadership and human rights, with advanced communication skills in negotiating and advocating for the realization of human rights, good governance and gender equality

is of I Taukei Decent (indigenous Fijian) with a background in Public Health having started his career in the area of Adolescent Health and Development, through the Fiji Ministry of Health. Isoa's work then was in the area of sexual health with HIV awareness. Following that he moved into the NGO space where his work focussed on rural WASH programs integrating Disaster Risk Reduction as well as Socio Economic Development. Always with a passion for development particularly working with grassroots people, he has worked in the area of development and has opened up his understanding of the many, facets of development and importance of engaging with key stakeholders for the successful delivery of programs. RISE is Isoa's first opportunity working with informal settlements and it’s been as rewarding as it has been challenging. Hopefully through the proof of concept we’re aiming to provide in the RISE program, we should be able to address access to services such as waste water management for urban informal settlements in Fiji and the Pacific. Informal settlements are home to more than 1 billion people worldwide who face adverse living conditions and suffer from poor health and wellbeing as a result of inadequate water and sanitation services, and environmental exposure to pathogens, pollutants and disease vectors. RISE’s vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of residents of urban informal settlement across the developing world by improving the environment in which these communities live. To achieve this, RISE is trialling a holistic water-sensitive approach to upgrading sanitation, drainage and climate resilience through a randomised control trial (RCT) involving 12 informal settlements in Suva, Fiji, and 12 settlements in Makassar, Indonesia – half of which are being upgraded as ‘intervention’ settlements under the RCT, and the other dozen ‘control’ settlements to receive upgrades following completion of the RCT. RISE is collecting the first-ever rigorous scientific evidence of the human and environmental impacts of this water- sensitive revitalisation approach to inform policies and investments to improve living conditions for residents of informal settlements around the world.

The workshop was an event of the UN Pacific Urban Partnership (PUP) that seeks to accelerate the implementation of the New Urban Agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the Pacific. PUP partners include: Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), EAROPH, Home in Place, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability (Oceania), Monash University, UN-ESCAP, UN-Habitat, and the University of Melbourne. The Workshop was held at the Pacific Urban Forum (PUF6), in Fiji in 5-7th  September 2023.

Suzanne Thompson – is very proud of her ancestral bloodlines, and brimming with knowledge of her culture, Australian history, and innovative ways to share her passions with others in a respectful and contemporary way.

With 20 years working in both the government and community sectors Suzanne found herself following in her cultural footsteps as a pioneer for social and economic empowerment, trade, and indigenous self-determination.

She is Founder and Managing Director of Yambangku Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development Aboriginal Corporation (YACHATDAC) which manages a 22,000 Acre Property in Outback Central Western Queensland, she is now redefining the very idea of social enterprise and appropriate cultural trading methods that will ensure a safe and transparent economic future for indigenous people.

Suzanne also volunteers her time as the Chair of the Australian Native Foods and Botanicals (ANFAB) National Peak body and is working directly to secure indigenous interests and right in this rapidly expanding global marketplace.

She has just been appointed as indigenous advisor to the Tourism & Events Queensland board (TEQ), and interim secretary for the newly formed Queensland First Nations Tourism Council, the peak body for First Nations Tourism in Queensland.

She is currently fostering support and investment for nature-based economies, including Indigenous Land Management, Carbon Farming and First Foods & Medicines, and the recognition, protection, and renumeration of indigenous intellectual knowledge by industry.

GUEST: Joanne Willmot

A proud Wakka Wakka woman, Jo has always been a strong and effective leader for her community. She has worked for over 45 years in State and Commonwealth Government, as well as Aboriginal and non-government agencies.

Over the last 14 years while working with Relationships Australia SA as our Practice Manager of Aboriginal Programs and Policy, she has led the development of Cultural Fitness training with a focus on building cultural safety for Aboriginal staff and clients. She has contributed extensively to the national Relationships Australia Indigenous Network (RAIN) as well as supporting many other organisations to develop cultural fitness. Her commitment to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities underpins every aspect of her work.

The National Treaty Alliance (NTA) is an unincorporated association of First Peoples and their supporters who believe in the development of a treaty between Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples and non-Aboriginal Australia as the best way forward in accommodating the needs of all Australians in the future. It aims to

1) Elevate the discussion about Makarata and Treaty to the top priority in the context of the Albanese Government’s commitment to implement the “Uluru Statement’ in full.

2) Encourage genuine discussion and debate in initially the Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples Community about the content and form of a Treaty with the Aboriginal & Torres St Islander peoples that delivers real justice in legal. cultural and social terms.

3) Ensure broad-based Indigenous Community negotiations occur concerning any options that that are put forward to the Australian Parliament.

4) Any consensus position on behalf of Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples advanced to government or referendum should have the “full. Informed and prior consent” of Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples People as defined by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 2007 and be consistent with the treaty principles contained within that document.

5) Publish, Advertise and in other ways promote alternatives to the current “Voice” proposals to Federal Parliament including

a) Lobbying Political Parties and individual politicians to support NTA proposals

b) Achieving maximum media coverage of enunciated positions

c) Making alliances with Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples Organisations and Communities around the country

d) Develop relationships with other organisations that may support the position of the NTA.

e) Reaching out to the International Community for support for Aboriginal & Torres St Islander Peoples causes.

Claire has her own production company, creating and producing multiple theatre shows and events for Port Douglas Carnivale.  As an entrepreneur she built and sold multiple businesses – Bliss Catering, Give a Dog a Bone – dog walking, Sand Greeting Cards – hand made gift cards.

An adaptable service industry professional with extensive analytical skills, personal integrity and an innate capacity to create trust in people. Claire has navigated a 30yr battle with an illness not known to have a cure. She smiles her way through adversity with grace  and flair.

Our Human Experience presents a series of podcasts where regular people share inspirational stories about their life, their journey and their human experience. We contemplate illness, wellness misfortune, recover, survival land, other encounters and deep diver into the complexities of living.

Our Human Experience is hosted by Claire Tierney and Anna Winter, a dynamic duo with their own lived experiences to share.

In this current era of disconnection, through social media and lock down, we felt compelled to create this podcast as an avenue to record stories to inspire and intrigue us, and others who are feeling in any way overwhelmed by their current situations. Every story is unique, every story tells the tale of rising from adversity and living the human experience.

A story is a rolling narrative filled with great personal tales of turmoil and triumph. Introducing our guest, Don Mackay

Don McKay from My Evolution Coaching and Consulting, is a Consultant, Trainer, Author, Keynote Speaker, Health and Performance Coach, avid learner and student.  His combination of work and life experience in challenging and diverse areas brings a unique perspective to his passion; aggregating performance strategies to help people get the most out of their professional and personal life.

Don has worked in Law Enforcement for 34 years and has 26 years’ experience in middle and senior management roles.  Specifically, his experience revolves around leading and managing specialist multi-discipline teams undertaking complex high-risk operations.

He has a Master of Professional Studies (High Performance and Resilience Strategies) through the University of Southern Queensland and a Diploma of Public Safety (Policing).

Don has 28 years of training experience and is an engaging presenter and experienced facilitator.  He has designed and delivered specialist training packages in Critical Incident Decision Making for Paramedics, Paramedic Students, Nursing Students and Non-government Organisations (NGO) employees for Central Queensland University (CQU) Cairns Campus. He has also designed and delivered interactive professional development workshops for staff and students across a broad range of organisations with participants ranging from Students to Senior Managers and Executive Staff.

In 2017, Don started 'My Evolution Coaching and Consulting' to provide a platform to reach and support more people, businesses, and organisations to continue the important conversation around high performance and resilience. Since March 2019, he has delivered My Evolution High Performance People Workshops to over 1600 people across a broad range of industries in Queensland.​

A 41 year old Aboriginal woman and descendant from the Jaru and Kija people from the North East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Born in a small town called Wyndham, Samantha travelled around Australia and around the World delivering Aboriginal presentations for the Australian Embassy and producing documentaries for SBS, NITV (National Indigenous TV), ABC, Discovery Channel and National Geographic.

Samantha is an Author of the Bush Tukka Guide published by Hardie Grant in 2014 and Television Presenter for SBS/NITV and ABC for a TV show called ‘My Bush Tukka Adventures by Samantha Martin’.

Founder and Director of Tribal Voice Connections, Samantha, has developed a business that reflects the passion she has for her Indigenous heritage. Samantha also provides unique cultural services and consultancy to empower an understanding of cross cultural exchange and awareness for a more sustainable future.

Writing for 4WD Magazines, Cooking and Health Magazines, Samantha specializing in turning bush tukka into gourmet meals that will encourage anyone to want to introduce Bush Tukka into their kitchens. Samantha is passionate in preserving the knowledge and wisdom of hunting and gathering Bush Tukka

Introducing our guest, Jane Cafarella

Jane Cafarella is a versatile writer and cartoonist whose work has been published in newspapers, journals, magazines and books in Australia and overseas, and whose plays have been performed nationally and internationally and translated into Turkish and Tamil.

A former journalist and cartoonist, for the past 10 years, she well known in Victoria for her column in The Age newspaper about family life. 

For the past 10 years her focus has been playwriting.  Jane’s short plays have been produced in Australia, Singapore, London and Scotland. Two have been translated into Tamil.

Since its premiere in Melbourne in 2015, her first full-length play e-baby, which is about surrogacy, has been produced every year to critical acclaim, with productions in Sydney, Hobart, Ohio and London.  e-baby has also been translated into Turkish. Sadly, productions in Columbia, Missouri, and in Spain have been postponed due to Covid-19.

Jane’s second full-length play, d-baby, about a donor-conceived teenager searching for her true identity, has had successful readings in Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart and was a finalist in the 2018 international playwriting competition New Works of Merit, based in New York. d-baby is a companion play to e-baby, but not a sequel.

Her latest show Uked! – The first play-along ukulele musical  enjoyed two sell-out seasons in Central Victoria in 2019 and is now licensed by David Spicer Productions for others to produce. 

During lockdown, Jane’s focus has been memoir. Jane lives in Castlemaine, in Victoria, Australia, with her husband Rob. She has two adult children and a grandson. And yes, she plays the ukulele.

Introducing our guest, Alteouise Devaughn

A native of Altadena California, Mezzo Soprano Alteouise DeVaughn has performed with opera companies all around the world. Currently residing in Port Douglas, FNQ with her husband of 9 years, Idris Alkamraikhi. 

Alteouise attended Eastman School of Music, Rochester N.Y. and The Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She is a winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition.

Mezzo Soprano Alteouise DeVaughn is well known to audiences throughout the United States and Europe. Since her move to Far North Queensland, she has been delighting Australian audiences and has recently joined Opera Australia as a principal Artist. 

Ms DeVaughn made her professional debut with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra , and her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Collegiate Chorale as the alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah. 

She made her debut with the Atlanta Symphony under the direction of Robert Shaw. She made her European debut at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, Italy.

Ms DeVaughn has performed a wide variety of major roles with opera companies all around the world, the list is truly extensive. 

Currently she is the music director of her local community Theatre in Port Douglas.

In 2021 she joined a massed choir of singers from across the region where she performed a soloist role in Handel’s ‘Messiah’ at CPAC.  She was recently recognised by Douglas Shire Council and awarded the Arts and Culture award at the Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day 2022. She is an inspiration to the community, voluntarily directing six choirs from Cairns to Cooktown and the Atherton Tablelands.

In 2021 she joined a massed choir of singers from across the region where she performed a soloist role in Handel’s ‘Messiah’ at CPAC.  She was recently recognised by Douglas Shire Council and awarded the Arts and Culture award at the Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day 2022. She is an inspiration to the community, voluntarily directing six choirs from Cairns to Cooktown and the Atherton Tablelands.

Introducing our guest, Korina Jones

Korina Jones, born in Darwin and raised in Australia child of two immigrant parents raised to love everything about Australia “the heat sunshine make life in the north so fabulous”. Went to school at Cairns High. Karina married Colin from Thursday island had two children HOLLY and KEHL. As a family they enjoy adventurous holidays, sweet ski trips to Japan, surf lifesaving weekends in Mackay camping.

In her third 20s she worked in childcare. In her early 30s she participated in her first triathlon. 

Currently she works as a Personal Trainer.  I like to help those who have put others first in their lives and are now ready to feel better in their own skin. “We understand the milestones of ageing and the challenges women face following childbirth through to menopause. Korina is now a qualified Fitness trainer.

Introducing our guest, Kim Eaton

Kim Lorelle Eaton born and raised in Brisbane, on 22 December 1967, the middle of three girls. She is a registered marriage celebrant, an educator and trainer, an ex -law enforcement officer, Queensland Police and Australian Border Force – 20 years, a qualified hairdresser, a farmer and a Justice of the Peace. 

Married to her childhood sweetheart Brad for over 35 years and a mother of four young men currently aged between 29 and 23. 

Since marriage Kim has moved to Mt Isa, North Stradbroke Island, PNG, Innisfail, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Moranbah before moving to Cairns in 1999 where they have largely resided or been based since. 

Throughout her work she has worked in exciting places like Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Libya and Barcelona, Thursday Island and most cities in Australia.

Kim is also a registered breeder of quality Boxers and is currently producing top quality puppies that are in high demand across Australia. 

She is a registered marriage Celebrant who also performs elopements, child naming, renewal of vows, celebration of life services, divorce ceremonies! And I will be asking her more about this

Kim believes in romance, and many of her clients refer to her as effortless and eloquent.

At the age of 53 if I had my time again there really isn’t much that I would change – though I would have loved to have been a diplomat!

Introducing our guest: Grant "Scooter" Patterson Born and bred in Cairns, Far North Queensland, true blue Aussie, outgoing midget (short person whatever you want to say lol).

Born with a rare form of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia, when two people meet this is like a 1 in a million chance of this happening, I always joke about that's my parent's chance of winning the lottery out the window, goneee!

"Nickname Scooter comes from the three wheeled trike that I scoot around on, enables me to be very independent at work and home, also great for when I drive somewhere, I throw it in the passenger seat, it weighs only 4.5kgs.

I work fulltime at a business called allied bearings and tools, I do customer sales (over the counter and over the phone), worked there for over 7 years. The good thing about my job, it allows me to also focus on my professional swimming career. I bought my first house in 2015.

I have been a part of the Australian swim team since 2009, I made my first Paralympic games in London 2012 (made one final), I have made multiple world champs teams, and recently became a dual Paralympian at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where I fulfilled my dream of chasing that illusive Paralympic medal for over 13 years and won a Bronze in the 150m Individual medley SM3 and a Silver in the 50m Breastroke SB2.

My hobbies fishing/spearfishing, quad biking, running my dogs (I have two Kelpies) beside the quad bike, recently just built my first go-kart and getting into racing. I love socialising and being outdoors.

Best known for her long and successful swimming career, Lisa Curry has competed in three Olympic Games, two World Championships and three Commonwealth Games. She was also the first swimmer to represent Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games as a mother. In 1992, with two small children, Lisa swam her fastest ever time at the Barcelona Olympic Games. 

Lisa has won four Outrigger Canoe World Championships with her team, the Riggeroos in the 72km race, and in 2005, Lisa became the first Australian to win the Hawaiian Molokai to Oahu 66km solo outrigger race. Lisa has been inducted into the Australia Hall of Fame.

Introducing our guest, Martine Cotton

2021 Bachelor of Health Science graduate, Martine is looking forward to an exciting future in public health. Some of my strengths and interests include public health intervention program design and evaluation, digital health and health technologies, global health and infectious diseases, health policy and research, nutrition science, health promotion, multi-media and project management.

Wrapping up a long and happy career in the creative industries (music business, festival and event production), Martine founded the much-loved music industry professional development resource, Music Industry Inside Out in 2014 after wrapping up as Program Manager at QMusic, where she managed the statewide education program, produced the Queensland Music Awards and Little BIGSOUND, and worked on BIGSOUND.  Martine began kicking around live music and the creative industries as a teen and have worn many many different hats over the years, including Splendour in the Grass staffing manager, The Zoo live music venue manager & booker (1995 - 2000), artist manager, booking agent, performance curator, festival booker, stage manager, tour promoter, tour manager, professional photographer, website designer, event manager, digital marketing manager and consultant, music industry educator, university tutor and mentor. All of these roles have been fuelled by a lifelong passion for music, the arts, technology, innovation and community.

Our Human Experience presents a series of podcasts where regular people share inspirational stories about their life, their journey and their human experience. We contemplate illness, wellness misfortune, recover, survival land, other encounters and deep diver into the complexities of living.
