Robach and Holmes cover the latest news headlines and entertainment updates and give perspective on current events in their daily “Morning Run.”
Morning Run with Amy and TJ an iHeartRadio podcast. Good morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Ron. It's Tuesday, January seventh.
I'm Amy Robot and I'm TJ.
Holmes and on the run this morning. Trump's victory is certified, Kamala Harris is dignified, Rudy is in contempt, and Trudeau is in transition.
Also this morning, the president elect faces sentencing, the US faces terrible bird flu news, a senator's husband faces handshake criticism, and finally, an A List divorce and an A List engagement in Hollywood.
Yes, we're running the relationship gamut today in Hollywood, and these are A listers and breaks your heart but then makes you hopeful. We have that news out of Hollywood today, But we have to begin this morning on the run in DC, where a much different January sixth played out yesterday, you know, one where Trump supporters don't attack the Capitol in an attempt to prevent the lawful and peaceful transfer power.
Yes, the process of certifying the presidential election results got back to its uneventful self yesterday with the Joint Session of Congress. And if you didn't watch this drawn out procedural repetitive process like we did.
This is what you missed.
Each state and its electoral results are announced. Usually many applause breaks out in the chamber after each state is called.
Fifty states.
This usually takes about a half an hour and it is in fact a monotonous process.
Yes, nothing to it right, really boring stuff. But there was still high drama and intrigue throughout because standing right there participating in the process was Vice President Kamala Harris, the person who lost the election, and as Vice President she serves as President of the Senate. In yesterday, had to preside over the certification of her own defeat.
Yes, we were all and she knew it before going into it. Everyone was going to be watching her facial expression, her body language, which she handled herself with cloud and grace throughout it all. And she said afterwards that the day represented what should be the norm and what the American people should be able to take for granted that there will be a peaceful.
Transfer of power.
She went on to say, today I did what I have done my entire career, which is takes seriously the oath that I have taken many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, which included today performing my constitutional duties.
And we look this up.
She's not the first vice president to have to do this, presiding over this procedure. We only have to go back to al Gore correct as the most recent.
Not that far, and Nixon had to do this, I believe as well. So we've seen it. This was unique in modern times, and the type of campaign we saw was unique. So this was still even though we've seen something like this before, it still was different this. I think she was giving credit widely, giving credit from the biggest moments during her campaign. She nailed them. When she had to do the debate, she nailed that he acceptance speech, she nailed that. This was another big moment, and she nailed it right. She handled this thing as professionally and as in a dignified of a manner as you could hope for. And it no matter what you think sometimes about the country getting it right or wrong, it's kind of beautiful to see the process play out like this, as heated as that campaign was, to see our transition of power go as smoothly and beautifully as it does.
And I think in comparison to what happened four years ago, I think we had all taken it for granted, truly until what happened January sixth of twenty twenty one. I believe that was the moment when we thought, WHOA, this is what happens in other countries, this is what happens in unstable countries. And so to see it all happen the way it should, I think gave everybody a sense of security that perhaps was lost four years ago.
And we will continue now here in DC. This next leg of our run is kind of connected to all the certification process and seeing a new Congress coming in. So something happened before the notification and it's raising a lot of eyebrows, and the vice presidents were the first eyebrows to go.
That's right.
During Congress's swearing in ceremony on Friday, Nebraska Republican Senator deb Fisher pleasantly smiled and shook VP Harris's hand after she took her oath, which is customary.
Yeah, but what happened next has set off a heated debate. The Vice President then turned to the senator's husband, Bruce, who was standing next to her, and offered him her hand for a handshake, saying, may I give a congratulations to you.
Bruce replied with a gruff thank you and put his hand in his pocket instead of shaking Harris's hand, which was left outstretched and empty. If you watch the video, which by the way, is everywhere online, you will not have a problem finding it. Harris uncomfortably turns away after that very awkward moment with her eyebrows raised, and then had to take an even more awkward picture with the couple.
Okay, the picture actually is the most hilarious part of this story. If you want to find anything funny, it's that awkward, awkward photo group photo, and it's clear somebody doesn't want to be in the group. That's comde There's three.
On one side, yes, and Vice President Harris on the other yes.
What the video sence of emerged? People have been passionately weighing in, some calling out the senator's husband flat out calling him rude, disgraceful, and classless is a word being thrown around a lot.
Others supporting him, one comment saying he's now reached legendary status for snubbing Harris, but others point to the fact that Bruce had a cane in his hand. It was in his right hand and a Bible in his left hand when the vice President went to shake his hand.
Yes, so he didn't have a free hand, is what some are saying. However, his wife, the Senator, quickly takes the Bible from him so he can shake Harris's hand, and instead he slips that hand in his pocket.
His body language, his lack of eye contact and sorry, but when you listen to it, the terse way he says thank you with zero emotion also makes him putting his hand in his pocket feel very intentional. There has been no official comment from the senator or her husband, And look, I was even saying, okay, what if I was trying to figure out what hand he had free when his wife took the Bible from him, I think it would have been a weird hand his left hand. However, as you pointed out, he could just quickly we've all been in that situation, switch his cane or whatever else you're holding into his other hand to free up his right hand to shake her hand.
It would not have taken much for him to shake his hand.
There were for hand that we're all trying to interpret. It is hilarious, and yes, if you're on one side of the aisle. You see it one way, you know, the folks applauding him and saying, ay, is this showing how the rest of the country really feels about her and all these types of things. It's the vice president of United States, shake her hand, and no matter what, it's just an ugly moment. Is a disappointing moment that I don't care what you feel. She's not an evil. We see her as evil to where I won't even shake her hand. It's just we can't be there. And it's just an ugly, ugly moment and was supposed to be a beautiful moment for the family and customary and ceremonial. It looks awful. I don't know what's in his head or his heart. I don't know what his experience in life has been to make him react to that woman that way, but.
By it hurt my heart because this is the whole coming together moment. You know, we've all been divisive in the political election, and by the way his team won, you know, his side one, so to be that rude and I just think that's what it is.
It's just rude. And I actually said, you know, instead of being.
Angry at him, or feeling any sort of ill will towards him. I actually just feel sorry for him, because if you have that much contempt in your heart that you can't even shake someone's hand who's offering theirs to you in a moment of congratulations, in a moment of welcome back to the Senate, it was done in good faith and in a good spirit. I just feel sorry for somebody who can't find anything inside of them to just extend a common curtis and return a handshake. Good.
Wait, I will still give him the benefit of the doubt and wait to hear he might have a very good reason for what happened, so I will hold judgment.
Yeah, I would just say anyone listening, if you haven't seen the video, if you haven't seen the picture, you know what, just take a watch, take a listen, and you know, decide for yourself.
All right, Well, next up on the run on this Tuesday morning, President elect Trump is still on course to be sentenced Friday this Friday for his hush money case convictions, after judge denied his request to delay that sentencing.
A judge on Monday rejected Trump's argument that sentencing should be put on hold while other appeals are playing out. Trump was convicted last May on thirty four felon accounts related to a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
That Trump appealed and asked for his convictions to be thrown out, but last week, in a highly anticipated decision, the judge refused to throw out the convictions, but also said he was going to sentence Trump, but he was not going to sentence him to any jail time. So Trump is now expected to appear at that sentencing Friday via video.
The President continues though his effort to get his convictions thrown out. He still has several appeals pending in this case, so there will still be a lot more legal maneuvering going on beyond Friday.
Yeah, email, he won't get jail time, possible sentences. We're talking about probation and a fine, so some of those things could come his way. So that's why they still go through the process.
All right.
Next up on the Run, the US now has its first human death reported from bird flu.
He had the Louisiana patient he told you about last month who contracted bird flu from a contact with a backyard flock died yesterday.
Officials are protecting the patient's privacy. We only know that they're over sixty five and had underlying medical conditions. The Louisiana Department of Hell says no one else appears to be infected with bird flu from those birds that this patient came in contact with or the patient themselves.
And important for us to note here that the patient was infected from a strain of bird flu from wild birds that is a different strain than the other one that's been circulating in cows and in poultry forms right now, officials aren't sure though, whether the flu strain that killed the Louisiana patient is a more dangerous one.
Yeah. Bird flu has infected more than sixty people here in the US in the past twelve months. Most of them, though, have been mild cases, and they were mainly farm workers who touched their eyes after touching infected animals.
Oh my goodness. In addition to staying away from sick of animals and keeping your pets away from the Department of Health recommends to reduce your risk of bird flu, you should also remember to avoid uncooked or undercooked food. We do a story every day about something related to your food being.
Dangerous, and look, bird flu has been circulating worldwide since nineteen ninety seven, so this has been around for a long time. But I know that microbiologists, virologists, folks who study these sorts of pathogens and try to predict any sort of larger health issue could come into play, have been keeping their eye closely on these trains of bird flu. So this is just something that's being monitored and right now officials say it's nothing to worry about, but just be mindful.
All right, we'll stay with us here on this Tuesday edition of The Morning Run. When we come back, Trudeau says goodbye, and Zendaya says.
I do, welcome back everyone to Morning Run. The next Look, Ever, Run takes us north of the border for a big political announcement. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he is resigning as prime minister.
Says he's going to serve until March twenty fourth, when he'll be replaced by a new Liberal Party leader. He said he believes as a resignation will bring the temperature down, saying that Parliament needs a reset and his departure will decrease the polarization that we have right now.
Now the leader of the opposite posician Conservative Party in Canada, responded saying it was a trick and a political maneuver. By the way, he is also going to be running for prime minister in the fall. Fifty three year old Trudeau has been Prime minister of Canada since twenty fifteen, and support for his Liberal Party has been steadily declining. In fact, that Conservative Party now holds a twenty one point lead over the.
Liberals, so they have to have another federal election on October twentieth. President Elect Trump, well, he had a fun reaction to what happened, says that he believes Trudeau resigned in part because of his Trump's new tariffs on imports from Canada.
He wrote on social media, and I'm quoting the President elect here. Many people in Canada love being the fifty first state. The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned, So he's kind of taken credit for Trudeau's resignation. That's not like Trump usually, no, not at all, but it's interesting. Trudeau traveled to mar A Lago last month, he met with Trump. When he came out of the meeting, he told reporters his conversation with Trump was excellent, but he wouldn't take any questions, so we don't really know what went on behind closed doors there in mar Laga.
Look forward to reading Trudeau's book. We'll continue here on our morning run. Head back here to New York, where former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been found in contempt of court, but a federal judge is yet to throw him in jail or say what type of punishment he's going to face.
The judge has a couple options available to him. He could sanction Giuliani re some fines, or he could yeah, he could give him some jail time. Giuliani has refused to turn over the bulk of his assets.
We have been talking about this now for.
Months, to pay down that one hundred and forty eight million dollar judgment against him after he defamed two Georgia poll workers. He falsely accused them of helping to steal the twenty twenty presidential election from Donald Trump.
Giuliana going to be back in court January sixteenth. He's set to argue that his Palm Beach condo should not be included in the seizure of his assets because well, it's his primary residence.
His lawyers said the judge's decision to find Giuliani in contempt was politically motivated. Now Giuliani could face separate contempt charges at the end of this week on Friday. This is in a Washington, d c. Court for violating an order of there to stop repeating those false claims about the two poll workers. He still is saying stuff, and he's still getting himself in more trouble. Honestly, there was so much that went on in that court room yesterday, went on for hours, but there was a lot of contempt back and forth between.
The judge and Giuliani.
It really is like political theater in court, and the judge is you can see, getting seemingly more and more frustrated. I mean, he's already lost his first set of attorneys, he's got a new set of attorneys, and he's just according to most people involved, he is delaying the discovery process deliberately to try and hold onto his items, to try fight it on appeals.
So we shall see. But this saga is far.
From over all, right, but we will wrap here. Here we wrap our run. On this Tuesday, We're going to head to Hollywood, where two A list couples took major but very different steps in their respective relationships. One couples getting divorced, the other couples getting married.
We'll start with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. The two have finalized their divorce and have asked a judge to sign off on the agreement, which officially ends Benefit two point out.
According to documents filed in La Superior Court, the two came to terms on the divorce back in September through mediation. Lopez had filed to a divorce a month earlier.
The two married back in twenty twenty two, and what was their second go round as a couple. The two dated and were engaged back in two thousand and two, but broke things off blaming the pressures of public life.
Now, most of these specific details about their divorce settlement were kept private, and this is one robes. I still until the moment I saw this news come across, I'm still holding out hope.
You were hoping, because you know, it was one of those love stories where they just couldn't work it out. It wasn't the right time, but they you know, their souls were aligned, and then finally the timing came to this perfect place where they could get married, and it was just this beautiful love story.
Twenty years separating those two relationships they had, and they had marriages in between and kids with other people in between, and then came back together after twenty years.
I know, it sounded so beautiful and so so good. And you know, anytime you go through a divorce, I will say it's impressive how quickly they handled it, how privately they handed handled it, and seemingly how amicably they handled it. Because they've been seen together, their kids have still been hanging out, So I mean that is the good thing that they.
They did it right.
They did it well, I guess, as well as you can divorce someone well.
On the opposite end of the relationship spectrum, we have Zendeia and Tom Holland.
Yes, and this we're gonna end on a positive note. This will be the final leg of today's ron. You know, we're used to seeing flashy diamonds on the red carpet, but there was one massive diamond ring on a certain finger on the Golden globes red carpet that had several entertainment outlets reporting Zendeia and her longtime partner Tom Holland are engaged.
Okay, Now, neither one of the Hollywood stars has officially confirmed this news, but a reporter from the La Times reportedly held her own engagement ring up and pointed it to Zindia, and she pointed to it, showing it to Zindeia, and Zendeia responded by showing her own left hand blake.
So when the reporter directly asked her if she was engaged, Zendia just kept showing her ring and shrugged her shoulders. Reportedly, she was smiling coyly. I believe that was the way it was described as well. People Magazine and TMZ have both reported the engagement is official, citing our Favorites quote sources close to the couple, and a family source confirming.
The speculation aka nobody.
We'll take that with a grain of salts.
Yes, THENDA has been linked with Holland since they played love interest in Spider Man Homecoming Back in twenty seventeen. A lot of folks are pointing to a press release that detailed what other jewelries in THEIAH was wearing to the award show. I did not know this robes so they do. I didn't know they do this. They put out the press release is saying they're wearing this person's dress, this person shoes, this person, you know, a head to toe thing. They gave the list of the jewelry that Zindia was wearing, including the necklace, the right hand ring, and the ear rings. There was no mention, though, of the ring on her left ring finger right.
So when they went they went so specific as to say she is a representative I believe of Bulgari, the jewelry and fragrance company.
So they went to say that.
The necklace, the right hand ring, and the earrings were all from bulgar And so when they didn't mention the left hand ring, well that just seemed to confirm the speculation even more.
They had to come onday, I stop asking with us. You know you're gonna walk the red carpet on that big night. Everybody's looking at you, and nobody's gonna notice that ring. Every time she stepped out in public, people look at her hand for the past two years plus and it's yes.
And Tom Holland wasn't there, by the way, So he wasn't a part of the speculation. But you know what, if it's true, congratulations to the help.
It's been seven years. I you know, they've been together for a long time. We're happy for them for making it efficient.
And do it however you want to do it. If you want to tease us on a red carpet one day and not announce it for another six months, you think.
You know what, these celebrities get so little privacy. It might just be a small, little fun win, you know what. And then when I want to do it however, I want to sneakily show you that's I get to.
There's just a little bit of power left, a little bit of privacy left. But good for them, all.
Right, So as we wrap up on this run, we like uh you to consider this as you continue your day on this Tuesday. It's our quote of the day.
Yeah, TJ and I actually saw this walking the other day on the streets of New York. Sometimes we see quotes artistically put on. These were actually cement roadblockers, right, So making something that's ugly, something beautiful with quotes and something to think about, and we really loved this one. To dream is free. But the hustle is sold separately. That's pretty cool.
And ain't that the truth? Everybody dream big dream? Yeah, it comes with hard work, it does, and the way it was I've never seen that quote, have no idea where it came from. If somebody made it up, if it's a famousquad, who knows. But man, ain't that the truth? We sell people on a dream, you got to remember that there's something that comes with it that you bust in your butty.
That's right, and you have to work for it and it's not a given and I think that's what makes.
When you do accomplish something. Yeah, if it was easy, everybody to do it. I always loved that quote too.
To dream is free. But the hustle is sold separately. Thank you so much for running with us on this Tuesday.
Everyone.
I'm Amy Robot and I'm TJ. Holmes. We'll see you on the run tomorrow
