Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good morning everyone, Welcome to your Morning Run.
I'm Amy Robot and I'm DJ Holmes. It is Monday, January twenty seventh. On the Run this morning, President Trump plays a high stakes game of Chicken with a foreign leader and one Also, Trump's immigration roundup is underway, so why is doctor Phil there?
Plus La goes from fire warnings to floodwatches, and Target joins other big companies and put.
A bullseye on its DEI.
And why the word boring was trending last night after we found out who'd be playing in.
The Super Bowl.
And on the confirmation front this morning, we officially got new secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security. Over the weekend, Mitch McConnell sends a message with a no vote on one of Trump's nominees, and the hot seats don't get hotter than this. RFK Junior Tulca Gabbard and FBI nominee Cash Bettel are up.
Next, and on this morning's final leg, some disheartening news to pass along out of South Carolina.
Say it ain't so.
The final few of those brave little escape monkeys have enjoyed their last day of freedom. We've enjoyed that story quite immensely over the past couple of months. Will bring you the latest update. But we begin our run with President Trump starting his second week on the job with a bang, proving when it comes to enforcing his new immigration policies, he means business.
Yeah, and his don't f with me strategy seems to have worked. On Columbia. The Colombian president tested the strategy when he refused to accept two US military planes that were bringing deported migrants back to Colombia. He wouldn't let the planes even land. They were in the air ready to drop the folks off.
That's right.
The Colombian president returned the flights because he claimed its citizens were being treated inhumanely, saying a migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with dignity that a human being deserves. That is why I returned the US military planes that were carrying Colombian immigrants or Colombian migrants in civilian planes without being treated like criminals. We will receive our fellow citizens.
So how did Trump take that? Well, he announced pretty soon after a twenty five percent tariff on all goods coming into this country into the US from Colombia and said that number would go up to fifty percent in a week. He also ordered a travel ban and immediate visa revocations on Colombian government officials, allies, and supporters.
Trump wrote on social media that we will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States.
But last night White House released the statement saying Colombia took everything back and had agreed to all of its terms and so the tariffs and sanctions against the country would be held in reserve.
However, the visa sanctions will remain in effect until that first planeload of deportees has landed in Colombia, and.
The White House added this in its statement.
Today's events make clear to the world that America is respected again. But those war of words between the two got really nasty. Did you see some of the things that the Colombian president said about Donald Trump?
Oh? Yeah, and you don't want to set off a trade war. This is not good of Plenty of people, and certainly Trump supporters will be clapping their hands and applauding and saying, look, this proves the point he is somebody that gets things done. Others will look at this and say this is the absolute wrong thing to do because somebody else, What if somebody in Europe would if China decided to do this against us?
Well, and obviously Colombians, the Colombian government tried to say, yeah, well we'll do it back to you. And so they said they were putting a twenty five percent tariff on our goods coming in.
But clearly we don't need them as much as they need us. Correct, correct, Well, continue our run on this Monday morning. Now, the Trump administration was busy at work enforcing its immigration policies here at home, launching a nationwide blitz arresting nearly a thousand people on Sunday.
It's all part of an effort to utilize multiple federal agencies to create a larger in force arms. So Trump White House brought in ICE agents, along with officials from the FBI, the DEA, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the US Marshall Service to what they say focused on public safety and national security threats.
What critics say is this is a roundup of illegal immigrants in this country. A lot of cities were targeted on Sunday. White house borders are Tom Harmon was on the ground of Chicago to observe operations. They are calling it a good day and a game changer.
Chicago's mayor said the city's police were not involved in the raids and urged residents to quote know their constitutional rights. Those raids also took place in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Austin, Colorado, and Puerto Rico, and operations just like the ones we saw on Sunday are expected to continue this week throughout the country, and a lot.
Of people were shaking their heads. I shouldn't say shaking, scratching, It's probably the way to put it. Because a lot of the video that was coming out and stuff that made its way on social media showing these raids included doctor Phil. Yes, doctor Phil was there with a crew, essentially saying he was embedded for some of these operations and they were shooting video. Not that clear to a lot of folks exactly what he was doing there, but I'm sure we will hear about it later and we will be seeing it as a part of some broadcasts.
Yes, he interviewed Tom Horman and said he was there to witness the operations, claiming that it wasn't what some people said. It was that they were actually arresting known criminals and terrorists, not just your everyday average citizen who is trying to feed his family or her family. And that's certainly we've seen varying statements about who is actually being arrested and who is not.
All right, we will continue here on this Monday morning, on this morning run. And it was a Rockey road. But after all that, former Fox News host Pete Hegseeth was sworn in as Defense Secretary over the weekend after a tight vote in the Senate so tight it required a tiebreaker.
That's right. The vote on Friday night was initially fifty fifty.
Former GOP leader Mitch McConnell made headlines as he joined Senator Susan Collins and Lisa Rokowski along with all the Democrats, to vote against Hegseth's nomination.
Vice President J. D.
Vance had to come in and cast that tie breaking vote.
On Saturday, Vance officiated Hegseth swearing in ceremony where Hexath thanked President Trump and said he looked forward to rebuilding our military Hecseth has been under intense scrutiny for allegations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement.
He has denied all of those allegations against him, and when he appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee, he told lawmakers that he was a changed man.
Well, the road to confirmation was a little smooth for South Dakota Governor Christy Nolme. The Senate voted Saturday to confirm her as Homeland Security Secretary with a vote of fifty nine to thirty four.
Yeah, a little more bipartisan on that one. Nome was sworn in later in the day, and in her official statement, Nome said she will secure our southern border and quote fix our broken immigration system, which we're seeing President Trump at least attempt to do over the weekends.
Yeah, we done with confirmation hearings either. This is going to be a doozy of a week. Wednesday, Robert Kennedy, Yes, RFK Junior, finally will appear before the first of two Senate committees on his path to confirmation for Health and Human Service as Secretary.
His nomination, as I'm sure many of you are aware, has concerned a lot of people for some of his views, including perhaps namely, his record of spreading unfounded fears about vaccinations and those unfounded claims that there's somehow a link to autism rates in this country. Then on Thursday, Cash Patel will appear before the Judiciary Committee as Trump's pick for FBI Director.
Yapatel has called for dramatically reducing the agency's footprint and for harsher punishments for government officials who leak information to journalists. Also on Thursday, former Congresswoman Tulci Gabbard will appear before the Intelligence Committee. She's been tapped by Trump to become the Director of National Intelligence. So this is look we expected fireworks. So much talk was about hegseth that you're like, oh, yeah, forgot we got RFK Junior to go.
I mean, I know where you're going to be for most of this week, to the television set, and when I or you can't be there, we will be texting each other back. You won't believe what just happened. But they're usually pretty entertaining, and I believe anyone who's a political junkie out there must see television.
Obviously there's grandstanding, a lot of going on that going on with some people who are this is the moment to get on TV and it's more outlandish and extreme and sometimes loud and combative you can be, then the more likely you're going to get on some primetime show. Are you going to make the evening headlines? Fine, but there's a lot just as the American public. This is great drama, but you also learn a lot about these nominees. This is fascinating to watch. Only happens every few years. So yes, I sit down, baby, let's watch.
Yeah, this is political theater. Actually, like truly political.
Theater at its best. We'll stay with us here on this Monday Morning Run, folks. We've got a lot more to get to, including why in the world we've been talking about fires in southern LA. Why are we talking about flood watches now? Also, Target is the latest company to say bye bye TOI And why now that we know the super Bowl is set, are people complaining about the two teams that are going to be playing in the Super Bowl.
Stay with us, Welcome back to Morning Run. Everyone.
Next up on the Run, parts of LA that have been dealing with red flag warnings the past couple of weeks are now dealing with flood advisories today.
Yeah, fire crews who continue to borrow to battle wild fire's got a welcome assist from light rain over the weekend, But flood watches are in place today in the LA area with heavier rain possible.
And that's a real well, that's possibly a real problem because mudslignes are mud slides are a concern. The LA County Sheriff issued a mudslides and rock warning, siting a high risk.
Yes, authorities are reminding Angelina's to have an emergency plan and be prepared for possible evacuations. Yes, folks have been on standby waiting to have to possibly evacuate because of fires. Now they're told, you might have to evacuate if we think there's too high of a mudslide risk. That's wild.
Those are scary warnings. I mean, just that can happen in a split second. You know, everything can change when it comes to those two events. So just not the news they were looking for.
You know, to some degree, you can see a fire starts burning and it's coming. Sometimes you might even get a couple of days heads up a mud slide. It's just you just got it. You just don't know that is so terrifying for the folks in LA. Right now, fire crews seem, though the good news have an upper hand on the three significant fires that are still burning their near full containment. I think this morning the ninety eight, ninety five, and ninety were the containments on the three main fires burning out there. So that is good news.
That is certainly good news.
Indeed, we'll keep that, and we'll keep of course the entire area and our thoughts and prayers today next up.
On our run. It sounds like an important.
And worthwhile business practice to have policies in place meant to hire and promote more women and more minorities.
So why is it that so many companies are ditch those policies, and Target is the latest among them. Over the weekend, the company announced it would abandon its d EI initiatives.
The company called it the next chapter in its strategy for more inclusive work environment. However, the company also said it understands the importance of staying in step with the evolving external landscape.
Yes external. They joined a growing list of companies getting away from Dei, McDonald's, Walmart, for John Deere, Harley Davidson, just to name a few that have scaled back or ended their DEI programs. DEI, you know, we just say it and just throw it out there, like everybody knows what we're talking about. I think everyone does at this point, right, Diversity, equity and inclusion, which is meant to just diversify workforce.
And uphold affirmative action well.
To kin even the playing field a little bit with some of these policies. But that's what we're talking about. They have come under attack the past few years from conservatives claiming the policies were unfair too white people.
They've come under attack more recently, specifically with the Trump administration as well, who has written several executive orders surrounding this and now clearing the way so to speak, for private companies to follow suit with what the federal government is doing. So yes, the folks who are against DEI argued that it puts some workers at a potential disadvantage if weight is given to things like gender and race. President Trump signed that executive order on day one doing away from DEI in the federal government, and wow, it didn't take long for many more companies and just for that wave along that way to really follow suit. It happened almost immediately.
It's a conservative wave, and you see the point of DEI look, there are plenty of folks who've been at a disadvantage in this country from its founding. So these policies are meant to try to even the playing field, to help folks out who didn't get some of the advantages that white folks got. Period, point blank. We would wish if we it'd be great if we all had merit base and it was completely based on nothing but the content of your character. But we know different.
Yes, but Trump is focused now on bringing that merit based system back, a very black and white approach to the situation to black and white.
You know, you see what I did there?
Yeah, well, then.
Goodness.
We will continue the run on this Monday morning now with the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is set. It's going to be the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Kansas City Chiefs again again.
Both teams secured their spots by winning their respective conference championship games yesterday, but in much different fashion. The Eagles, well, they dominated and ultimately blew out the Washington Commanders fifty five to twenty three.
So the Chiefs, on the other hand, found themselves in another nail bider with the rival Buffalo Bills, and it took a late field goal for the Chiefs to take the lead for good. They won that game thirty two to twenty nine. And this is the fourth year in a row now the Chiefs have dispatched the Bills in the playoffs and most have been in pretty heartbreaking fashion for those Buffalo Bills.
So yes, now the Eagles and the Chiefs will play in Super Bowl fifty nine. It will be in two weeks in New Orleans. Those teams have played each other in a Super Bowl just two years ago. The Chiefs won that one thirty eight thirty five. And yes, with all that we've just mentioned, the trend last night on social media was bulling.
The Chiefs have entered that New England Patriots I guess type of place to where them again, them again, them again. And they're likable guys. Don't get me wrong. The Patriots, you could see maybe why you would call them an evil empire.
No, the Chiefs have Taylor Swift, well.
They don't have her, you know what I mean. She comes with the package, but no, it's I get it. But the Chiefs are kind of a lovable era fun bunch to a great deal. Look, Patrick Mahomes, you love Patrick Mahomes. Bill Belichick was like Palpatine. You know what I'm saying, He was the emperor. There are to a certain degree, Bill, but love you. I'm just saying that's what the impression a lot of people had. So now you got these great teams having great years. These are the best teams, and people are complaining about it.
Clearly they are. They keep proving it year after year.
Bo congrats to them both. That's gonna be fun in a couple weeks and the final leg here on this Monday morning. This is an update we forgot. We were even waiting for this one. At the start of the weekend, authorities in South Carolina announced they finally captured the last four of those forty three escaped monkeys from that research facility. They got so many headlines mother sorgo yeah, well.
It was two and a half months ago. Actually, see you forget time. Time goes by so quickly and so often we don't give these updates, right. We stay on stories. We stay on stories, and then who remembers how it actually ended. Well, this one is pretty cool.
Those monkeys, those final four lived in the woods for two and a half months.
They even made it through that.
Rare snow storm last week where they got several inches of snow. Maybe that's what did them in. Finally they were attempted, were tempted back to the facility, we're told with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
However, they had.
Been trying to tempt them with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for months.
They got desperate enough. I suppose we've all been there. The monkeys initially escaped on November sixth, after an employee did not fully lock the enclosures. The monkeys were on the loose. Authorities continued to tell residents that there was no public risk. This was one of our favorite parts of it. They say, hey, there's no risk to the public, but make sure you lock your doors and close your windows.
Yeah, and do not attempt to confront the monkeys at any point. Called nine one one if you see the monkeys. But again, no public threat to your health. But to be fair, they weren't actually turns out they were just you know, they said they were small, they were female, they had no reason to have any aggression towards humans, and they just maybe they just wanted a little free time in the woods rooting.
For these monkeys the whole time. But as we wrap up this Monday morning run, folks, something we would like for you to consider as you go about your day. It is our quote of the day.
It seems it's like the perfect quote on a Monday. Here it is life is too short to live for the weekends only.
Everybody ask yourself this question. Every time you get on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, are you saying, man, if I can just get to the weekend, let me just get to the weekend. Are you asking yourself that maybe already on a Monday, man, just get to Friday.
That's why I talk to Sunday scaries, because they're just like anticipating in a bad way Monday and the whole week to ahead of them. But yeah, if you can approach every day sounds so cheesy as a gift, but it's true.
Monday is a new day, It's a new start.
I love that You're right. It did this quote. I'm can't remember where I got it, but it gave me a perspective about how sad is it if every day I'm only waiting to get to something else, get to a weekend. How terrible must life be? Or how terrible am I living that? Every five days a week I am only trying to get to the weekend.
It's no good, It's true, and I think it's just a reminder to appreciate the time you do have. An every day can be something special and something fun. You can. It's about your attitude, truly, I think about everything when it comes to what we have to do, what we want to do, it's how we approach it that makes the difference.
So yes, once again, here is your quote of the day.
Life is too short to live for the weekends only, and folks with that will help you enjoy it. Deal run, We always enjoy running with you, and please a reminder we are now starting today, on this day, we are giving you a Guaron tea. Oh man, I sounded like Chuck garon tea that the morning run will be available ready waiting for you by six thirty am Eastern time every single day. We have noticed we have got some anecdotal evidence as well, but we run into people on the streets who often say, yeah, I've wanted for my commute, so oh, can it be a little earlier or oh what time? So this is a way for everyone to be able to get their hands on it and know when it's coming on.
Yep, so we're excited. We don't mind getting brilli.
We're used to it after a couple of decades of doing so.
So thank you for listening, Thanks for running with us everyone. I'm made Me Robot and I'm TJ.
Holmes. We'll see you on the run tomorrow.
