Robach and Holmes cover the latest news headlines and entertainment updates and give perspective on current events in their daily “Morning Run.”
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio podcast. Good morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Run. It is Friday, December sixth I'm Amy Roeboch and my partner TJ. Holmes is actually on a plane right now, or at least heading to the airport. He's going to Iheart's La jingle Ball Lucky Him with his daughter Sabine. So I am doing the Morning Run solo this morning, So hope you will bear with me on this Friday morning and on the run this morning. We will not see the Ethics Committee report on former Congressman Matt Gates for now and move to higher ground. That was what millions of people were told in northern California yesterday. Plus New Yorkers are still on edge with a gunman on the loose as tens of thousands of people respond to the shooting death of the insurance CEO, and not in the way you might expect. Plus the first inst mission to the Moon in fifty years has been delayed. But there's a very good reason. And can you pronounce the Vice president's name correctly? Well, apparently there are a lot more of you than just Donald Trump who've been struggling with that one, we have some of the most mispronounced words of twenty twenty four. And finally, we know you've been waiting for it, we have the color everyone will be wearing and designing with next year. It's Pantones annual Color of the Year for twenty twenty five. We'll get into that in just a bit, but we begin our run in Washington, d C. This morning. House lawmakers voted late yesterday to not release that Ethics Committee report into former Congressman Matt Gates. Right now, it's unclear if that report will ever be made public. Republicans voted down two Democratic written resolutions that would have forced the release of the report that's been three years in the making, a report that investigated allegations of sexual miscomp conduct with a seventeen year old and illicit drug use by Gates. Instead, Republicans took both measures back to the Ethics Committee, which after a two and a half hour long meeting, decided once again to not release the report, saying that it's continuing to discuss the matter. The chairman of the committee told reporters that the panel would meet again before the end of the year. Gates has denied all allegations and once he resigned from Congress after Trump tapped him for Attorney general, Congress technically no longer had jurisdiction over him. And then last month we all remember, after a lot of growing pressure surrounding that report and the allegations in it, Gates withdrew his name for consideration for Attorney General and has said publicly that he will not return to Congress, even though he won his district this past November. The chairman for the Ethics Committee also said this, and you could read into it what you'd like, but seems pretty definitive. He said he believes that move by Gates should quote end the discussion, end quote about releasing the report. Next up on the run this morning, Imagine getting this warning and some of you did, You are in danger, get away from coastal waters, move to high ground or inland. Now. That was the frightening alert folks in northern California and up the coast were getting yesterday after a seven point zero magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami warning. The quake was centered near Ferndale, California. That's in Humboldt County. It's two hundred and sixty miles north of San Francisco to give you a sense of where it is on the map. So folks in the Bay area also reported feeling the quake, which struck around ten forty five in the morning Pacific time local time. That is a very strong quake. It knocked things around a bit. It knocked some things off shelves. You can see the photos online. And there was actual actually some minor damage to roofs in Ferndale, California, cracks in the roads in Rio Odell, and even a gas leak at a middle school in the area, but thankfully there were no reported injuries. The tsunami warning that covered more than five million people was issued soon after. Thankfully it only lasted an hour, but my goodness, I can't imagine what that hour must have felt like for folks who were living along the coast. Humboldt County is one of the most seismically active areas in the entire country. They see hundreds of earthquakes a year, just not usually as strong as a seven point zero, and there were more than thirty aftershocks reported since the big quake, and one even as large as a four point three magnitude earthquake. Look, I know folks in California know about this, prepare for this. Many people have lived through earthquakes, but still to get a warning like that following an earthquake could not have felt good at all. And certainly we're just happy there were no injuries reported in the incident yesterday. Next up on the Run, we're gonna head to Manhattan, where police say they are close to identifying the gunmen who shot and killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson right there in front of a midtown Manhattan hotel on the sidewalk in broad daylight early Wednesday morning. That gunman is still on the loose as of this recording. Now, detectives are learning some more information, though. They're learning that the shooter checked into a hostel on the Upper West Side. He was using a New Jersey driver's license that was not his. The hostile thankfully had a surveillance camera, and authorities have released some more images of him in the hopes that someone may recognize him. They were actually able to find an image of the shooter without his mask on, because get this, he was apparently flirting with the woman who checked him into the hostel. Sources say the woman asked to see his smile, and so he obliged. He pulled down his mask just long enough for that surveillance camera to capture a very clear image of his smiling face. It is eerie, to say the least. Police also now know the type of gun the gunman used in the shooting. It's fairly unusual, it's not easily attainable. So police were looking at all the recent purchases of this specific gun and found a gun shop in Connecticut that recently sold this exact type of weapons. So the hope is that lead could shed more light on the shooter's identity. In addition, they are running fingerprints and DNA tests on that water bottle that they found. They found a smudged fingerprint, so they're hoping that could lead them to the shooter as well. Now, the brazen, targeted and premeditated murder of Thompson, this is another really disturbing part of the story has sparked a huge social media reaction. Now, police specifically have said they have no known motive for the shooting, but of course people have pointed to those gun casings that mimic a phrase that many people use to talk about insurance companies and how they deny claims. So thousands of people have taken to social media to post about the killing, saying that United Healthcare and other insurance companies harm and kill Americans, denying coverage all in the name of profit. But the official Facebook post about Thompson's death from United Healthcare, of the forty thousand reactions to it, thirty five thousand used the ha ha emoji wow, and only twenty two hundred used this sad emoji That is disturbing to say the very least. Thompson was the father of two teenage boys, and his wife, Paulette, said she is shattered by this senseless killing, and of course we will keep you updated here on Morning Run as to the very latest on this ongoing investigation. Our Run takes us now to space or maybe not. NASA is delaying its first flight in fifty years with crew on board, to the Moon. Its planned mission to land on the Moon was supposed to happen in twenty twenty six. Well now it's been pushed back to mid twenty twenty seven. Part of the delay is a pretty major safety issue, specifically regarding the heat shield that keeps the crew capsule safe and intact that will be home to the astronauts from burning up as it re enters the Earth's atmosphere. The heat shield became charred and eroded in an unexpected way during an uncrude mission. It was a test mission back in twenty twenty two, So all this time MASS has been trying to figure out why. Well, yesterday they announced that the testing they've done has identified the root cause of the heat shield issue. So they're going to address the problem by flying with a modified trajectory to limit the time the capsule is skipping across the atmosphere. It's what it has to do to re enter the Earth. But of course all of that new planning will take some more time. All right, coming up here on the Morning Run, we are going to find out what some of the most mispronounced words are in this country, or at least the past year, and among them the vice president's name. Welcome back to the Morning Run everyone, and next up on our run, do you know how to pronounce the Vice president's name Kamala or Kamala? Well, her name has made the annual list of the most mispronounced words of twenty twenty four, and I don't think I probably have to tell this to most of you, but it is Kamala. By the way, the language learning company Babel has compiled a list of the things we apparently had the hardest time pronouncing this year. So besides the vice president's first name, Babel says we also struggled to pronounce the name of Sabrina Carpenter's now ex boyfriend. And to be perfectly transparent here, I didn't even know Sabrina Carpenter had a boyfriend or an ex boyfriend, and I didn't know who he is, so I've never even tried to pronounce his name. But how about if I go for it? Now? His first name is Barry. That's easy enough. His last name is spelled k e O g h a n. So do you know how to say that? He's an Irish actor who starred in Saltburn. So now I'm actually remembering who he is. Okay, So I would not know how to pronounce that, but apparently it is Keyogan, So Keyogan, Barry Keyogan. Everybody who needs to pronounce Sabrina Carpenter's ex boyfriend's name. Now, there was some other famous names on the list as well. Chapel Rone apparently when you see it, and honestly, I would want to do the same thing. A lot of people want to say Chappelle, Chappelle ron it is Chapel roone. And this other one I have to admit early on, several years ago, I struggled with how to say this, but it is Zendaya, so we know her, the famous actress. A lot of people want to say is in Zendaiah, which I definitely did as well. So it is Zendaya everyone. Uh. The word some glue tide is also on the list. It's the active ingredient in ozembic. And this one's funny for the folks in the UK. They also did this study for you folks over on the other side of the pond. They apparently have a hard time miss or pronouncing the word espresso, so it was included as one of the most mispronounced words because a lot of folks in the UK continue to call it expresso. I mean, I get it. You express yourself better after you have an espresso, But it is espresso. That is a fun list, all right. Also want to have some fun with this one as well for our final leg of the run on this morning run, and it is a truncated run without my partner. I'm sad to say, but if you were wondering what color you're going to be seeing everywhere in twenty twenty five, well, the Pantone Color Institute has just announced the color of the Year for twenty twenty five, and it is Mocha Moose. Pantone calls it an evocative soft brown. But if that doesn't really conjure up the color for you, how about this. They also describe it as a mellow brown infused with a sensorial and comforting warmth. Does that help? Okay? They actually have a few more descriptions that I'll pass along for you. They say, quote, Mocha Moose nurtures with its suggestion of the delectable quality of cacao, chocolate and coffee, appealing to our desire for comfort. End quote. And wait there's more. They also say this quote sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic. Mocha Moose extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace the aspirational and lux. I have to say, I went and looked at some of the comments from folks after this announcement was made. One of my favorite was a user said I can't afford this color. That made me laugh. All right, But apparently every December for the past twenty five years, Tone names a color of the Year for the upcoming year, and it's quite a process for them. They make their pick after looking at high fashion runway shows, interior design trends, pop culture moments, and even yes, it sounds like by the descriptions, they get into human psychology before they pick the color. Here are some of the past choices. In fact, the first color of the year was back in nineteen ninety nine and it was sky blue. I feel like that is really self explanatory and didn't need all of the descriptions we got for Mocha Moose. All right. Last year, or actually this year's color twenty twenty four, if you weren't aware, is Peach fuzz, a light fruity tone that conjures peace and serenity. And then the year before, in twenty twenty three, it was Viva magenta, which has been described as an unconventional shade for an unconventional time. Well, I am looking forward to finding some Mocha Moose sweaters for the winter to be and make sure I'm on trend. All right. We would like you to consider this as you go about your day to day. We always give you a quote of the day, so here is yours for this Friday. If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward. That is from Martin Luther King Junior. I know a lot of people struggling this time of year, and so it's just a good reminder that we can do something to move forward and to not stay stuck in our lives. So I'll repeat the quote for you once again. If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl. For whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward. Thank you mL K Junior, and thank you for running with us. I'm Amy Roboch and on behalf of my partner TJ. Holmes. Everyone have a wonderful weekend and we'll see are you back on the run on Monday. M m hmm.
