Lori La Bey talks with LindaThompson, founder of Theo's Flowers, who grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts, one of five siblings, in a family where caring for one another was simply a way of life. That early foundation of service would go on to shape both her career and her calling.

For nearly 40 years, she worked as a Human Resources leader in the healthcare field, dedicating her professional life to supporting people, organizations, and communities. Throughout those decades, her passion for helping others only deepened.

Theo's Flowers was born out of a deeply personal experience: watching both of her parents live with Alzheimer's disease. That journey gave her a firsthand understanding of the isolation and loss of connection that so often accompanies dementia and memory disorders — and also revealed how something as simple as a flower and a visit could bring a moment of joy, calm, or recognition to someone who needed it.

Determined to turn that experience into something meaningful, she founded Theo's Flowers as a way to repurpose beautiful floral arrangements and hand-deliver them to elders living with memory disorders, along with something equally important — the gift of a visit.

True to the spirit that inspired it, Theo's Flowers remains entirely volunteer-run and is powered by family: the founder's three sisters ( Nancy, Tracey, and Kristen), her two adult daughters, and Nancy's adult daughter all work side by side to keep the mission blooming. Together, they've built an organization rooted in kindness, environmental responsibility, and a shared belief that every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and remembered.

Theo's Flowers solves two problems at once — floral waste from weddings and events, and the isolation so many elders with dementia experience. About 90% of the flowers used are rescued rather than purchased, sourced from 50+ weddings and events.

The visit matters as much as the flowers

The bouquet is really a vehicle for something bigger — a hand-delivered visit. For someone with memory loss, a caring visit paired with something calming and beautiful can spark connection when words might not.

Explosive, volunteer-powered growth

Launched in September 2021 and entirely volunteer-run, Theo's Flowers has grown in under five years to a team of more than 50 volunteers who've hand-delivered over 700 bouquets — a compelling started-small, look-how-far-it's-come arc.

Generations in Bloom — the intergenerational piece

Separate from the core volunteer program, student volunteers have delivered 500+ additional bouquets — a natural spot to talk about bridging young people and elders, and inspiring listeners to get students or schools involved.

How the community can get involved

Florists, event planners, families, and care communities all play a role in the flower-rescue pipeline — a strong closing point that invites listeners to donate flowers, volunteer, refer a family member, or partner as a care community.
