Brisbane local Cameron Flavell is embarking on a world-record run attempt from Sydney to Brisbane to raise money for The Smith Family charity.

Brisbane local Cameron Flavell is about to embark on a world-record attempt, trying to run 1000km in just 10 days to raise money for charity The Smith Family.

Cameron Flavell told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "Hopefully through the awareness that we can shape from this run,  we're able to change some children's lives in Australia,

We have a Brisbane local about to embark on a world record attempt. I love a world record attempt, especially when it's one that comes with a great cause. He's trying to run a thousand kilometers in just ten days. The good cause is to raise money for the Smith family and the efforts in overcoming educational equality. Cameron Flavel is his name, and early tomorrow morning he's going to set off from the Sydney Opera House and make his way back here to Brisbane and try to do it all within ten days. Cameron's joining us on the line. Now, good afternoon to you.

Yeah, hey guys, how are we.

Yeah, we're fine. How are you doing?

Yeah, I'm doing good. I'm a little bit nervous, but feeling great, feeling ready to go, sister. Been a long time coming, so ready to just start the thing.

So you're in Sydney now, obviously, Cameron. When did you arrive in Sydney?

Yeah, I got down on Saturday, so did the drive down from Brisbane with a few of my crew, drove the basic route which I'll be running. So put things into perspective. But it's been nice to settle over the last few days and just relax, and yeah, start to think about what's coming ahead.

Before we get into sort of the physical aspect of this. I'd love to get a better understanding of why you wanted to do it, why you chose this particular world record attempt, and what the connection is for you to the Smith family to want to shine a light on the work that they do.

Yeah, for sure, Well I suppose it's a funny way to have to put it. Over the years, I've always done some challenges and tried to raise money for various charities, and this year I wanted to do things a little bit different. I'd always sort of done twenty four hour challenges or things that could be completed within a day, so put my mind to something that was going to take a little bit longer. And yeah, obviously running is one of those things that everyone's getting into now. And yeah, look at a couple of different records that would finish in Brisbane and saw the Sydney to Brisbane one, and it'd bigod one to try knuckle down on and give a crack Like I'm not a runner by any stretch of the word, but yeah, I'm excited to put one foot in front of the other. To do my best to hopefully get this record. But yeah, in terms of the Smith Family, the reason we chose it was it was actually a group decision. So obviously, ever run like this isn't as simple as just putting on a pair of shoes and heading the pavement. There's a lot of logistics that go into it. And so I've actually got a really good crew of friends and my coach and whatnot coming with me on the run. So there's eleven of us that will be on the road. So I'll be the only one obviously running, but because they're sacrificing their time, we wanted to look at a charity which aligned with all of us because there's a group effort. Obviously I will be the one running, but they're sacrificing a lot of their own time. They'll be sort of onto things fifteen hours a day to support me, And a clear favorite for us was the Smith Family. Reason being is we actually all grew up in sort of really loving households and at all the things that we needed to succeed as at young kids and have grown us into the good adults that we are today. So we wanted to essentially try to do a bit to help those kids who, by no fault of their own, aunts in a position to succeed because they face those barriers to success. So hopefully, yeah, through the awareness that we can shape from this run, we're able to change some children's live lives in Australia.

Yeah, that's a really lovely sentiment. I love the way that you put that too. Can I just want to reverse to the little throwaway line you put in there, which is I'm not a runner. I mean, I don't know whether or not I would say I'm not a runner, and I'm now going to take on a challenge of a thousand kilometers in ten days. Your definition of I'm not a runner, and maybe somebody listening's definition of I'm not a runner maybe two very different things. What do you mean by I'm not a runner?

I mean I think they're relatable common as I'm a former rugby player in the front row, and sort of the stigma around that is we don't like running. But since retiring, I think it was just a thing that I enjoyed. And yeah, I've actually never run one hundred kilometers in one go in my life.

Oh my gosh.

I just tried to do it for ten days in a row. Oh my gosh. Yeah, so it's going to be I put in a lot of work for training, Like it's been a big training block in my coach, Darcy Dawes, and a wonderful job to get me to where I am now. And I think we had an average it was about four and a half hours per day for the last four months worth of training. So I put myself in the best possible position. And yeah, some people they're probably like, he's definitely a runner, But in my eyes, I'm just an average guy who's just trying to do something like this.

Yeah. Well, I mean I don't know whether or not you've like actually, in the drive down, did a little bit of a clock of like, okay, this is zero, and then drove for one hundred kilometers and went, okay, that's a really long freaking way. Yeah.

I mean we had a ninety form of the run on my training block, able to get a fair idea about how much time. But I think I think the good thing for me is, like I mentioned that I've got my friends on the trip, so we'll do my bestiness distract me from.

How many pairs of shoes do you reckon you'll go through for a thousand clicks.

I'm going to say, I'm going to say four pairs of shoes on obviously how heavy I am at my feet? Yeah, I kind of drag them at the best of times.

Oh I am, you're really praining, you're painting a pretty picture. You're going to be doing the Cliffe Shuffle by the time we see you in Brisbane. I think, I know.

I can't wait.

Look, I think it's really exciting for you. You sound like an awesome guy, and you know the charity that you've chosen is a really special one and I really hope that you managed to do this, not just for the fact that you'll have yourself in the Guinness Book of World Records, and who doesn't like the idea of that, but because you're also doing a really familiar route to so many of us that live in Queensland who've driven down to Sydney, so we have some sort of an idea of what you've got in store and the cities that you'll be running through, and hopefully those towns will also greet you with open arms and give you a good feed. Yeah.

I mean, we've already had a few towns reach out asking if we need accommodation or if we need anything. So it has been overwhelming and the best sort of sense of the word in terms of the support we've got. But I'm super excited to hopefully be running into the Storybridge Hotel on the twenty eighth, Yeah, with a bunch of friends and family downe there to sport and like you mentioned, hopefully a world record.

Yeah, and we would love to speak to you again then Cameron as well, and check in with you at the end of the journey to see how the body's held up. You make sure you put the glide in all the right places because you're going to need it and it's a massive undertaking. Hope the body holds up because that's probably I think mentally it sounds like you're on the right track and you've got that sort of headspace you We just want the body to now play game, play the game with you, right, Yeah.

Absolutely, no, We're in a good spot.

I'm going to send everybody to have a look at your website, which is Project Roadtrain dot com. Or you can also head to the smithfamily dot com dot au if you want to throw a couple of bucks cams away And why wouldn't you. What you're doing is awesome. Look forward to talking to you when you hit the Storybridge Hotel at the end of the month. Mate, awesome.

Yeah, I really appreciate the support guys, and yeah, hopefully we can get it done
