Kgomotso Modise, standing in for Relebogile Mabotja, speaks to consumer journalist Wendy Knowler about South Africa’s rapidly growing online retail market.
New figures from the Online Retail in South Africa 2026 report, released by World Wide Worx in partnership with Mastercard, Peach Payments and Ask Afrika, show that South Africans are expected to spend R159 billion online this year up 2.5% from last year. For the first time, online shopping is expected to account for a tenth of all retail spending in South Africa. A decade ago, it represented less than 1%. That translates to around R29 billion in additional online spending in just one year roughly the size of the entire online retail market in 2020.
