Amahle Jaxx joins us to unpack a big question around youth participation in South Africa’s elections.

Voting registrations are now open for the upcoming municipal elections and other local polls. Anyone aged 16 and older can register — although you can only vote once you turn 18. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do it online at registertovote.elections.org.za.

But let’s be honest — young people are still not showing up to register or vote the way many hoped they would. At the same time, political parties and campaigns are flooding social media, from TikTok to Instagram Reels, trying to grab the attention of younger audiences.

So is it actually working? Are young people engaging with political content online, or are they still largely checked out of the political process?

Amahle Jaxx is a social media commentator and political educator who closely tracks what young people are watching, sharing and engaging with online — and she joins us to help unpack whether digital campaigning is really making a difference.
