If you feel like your money is being stretched further and further these days, there is a lot happening in the economy that could explain why. Earlier today, Statistics South Africa told us that consumer inflation has climbed to 4.4%; meaning prices, overall, are rising faster than they were a month earlier. And then, just a short while ago, the South African Reserve Bank raised the repo rate to 7.5%. Now, you might hear those numbers and think, “What does any of this have to do with me?” Quite a lot. Because these decisions can eventually determine how much you pay to borrow money, how much your monthly repayments cost, how much businesses pay to operate and, ultimately, how much you have left in your pocket at the end of the month. So, at a time when South Africans are already trying to make their money go further, are we heading into another squeeze, and what should households be watching? Independent economist Xhanti Payi joins us to unpack it.

A 59-year-old police lieutenant-general has been arrested over allegations involving the grooming of a 16-year-old girl and the rape of an 18-year-old woman, with his expected appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court yet to take place. While speculation continues over the officer’s identity, EWN says it has independently established who he is but cannot publish his name at this stage because the case involves a minor.
