For many people, school is supposed to be a safe space — a place where learners grow, feel supported and develop the confidence to pursue their future. But for some learners, school environments can sometimes be challenging, uncomfortable or even unsafe.Across the country, there have been ongoing conversations about learner safety, teacher conduct, bullying, and the responsibility schools have to protect children while they are in their care.This afternoon we’re opening up an important conversation about moments when learners may feel they need to protect themselves within the schooling environment — whether it’s from bullying, unfair treatment, or situations involving educators. To help us understand what systems are in place and what learners and parents should do when issues arise, we’re joined by a communications representative from the Gauteng Department of Education.
