It’s been a busy day at the Madlanga Commission, with developments around two witnesses at the centre of some of the evidence being heard by the inquiry. Mpumalanga taxi boss Oupa “Bafana” Sindane’s WhatsApp messages are now being presented to the Commission as it examines his alleged links to people in the taxi industry and individuals accused of being hitmen. His attempt to stop the use of those messages was also unsuccessful in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today. And then there’s Feroz Khan, who was expected to appear before the Commission but did not, after his application to postpone his appearance was dismissed. The Commission has now directed that criminal charges be laid against him. We’re speaking to EWN reporter Karinda Jagmohan for more on what has been happening at the Madlanga Commission today.

Earlier today, Statistics South Africa told us that consumer inflation has climbed to 4.4%; meaning prices, overall, are rising faster than they were a month earlier. And then, just a short while ago, the South African Reserve Bank raised the repo rate to 7.5%. Now, you might hear those numbers and think, “What does any of this have to do with me?” Quite a lot. Because these decisions can eventually determine how much you pay to borrow money, how much your monthly repayments cost, how much businesses pay to operate and, ultimately, how much you have left in your pocket at the end of the month. So, at a time when South Africans are already trying to make their money go further, are we heading into another squeeze, and what should households be watching? Independent economist Xhanti Payi joins us to unpack it.
