Zimbabwe's proposed draft legislative changes described as a coup in motion

View descriptionShare

Zimbabwean social justice movement, the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), has labelled the proposed draft legislative changes to extend presidential terms from five to seven years and potentially keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa in office until 2030 as a "coup in motion".

The organisation says it has submitted a petition to African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, urging the AU to intervene.

Zimbabwe's cabinet has backed draft legislation that could significantly reshape the country's political landscape.

For more reaction on this development Lulu Gaboo spoke to Zimbabwean legal academic and activist Munya Gwisai and the opposition leader of the MDC, Douglas Mwonzora
