Update:  Rescue operations continue at building collapse Western Cape Province, SA

As South Africa marks Child Protection Week activists say it is critical to acknowledge the hard reality faced by the youth.

According to the State of the South African Child report, a Deloitte report commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, a large portion of adolescent children in South Africa suffer from various forms of abuse.

Findings highlight that more than four million children live below the poverty line. Beyond South Africa, millions of children across the continent are dealing with the consequences of climate change, restricted access to school and healthcare, starvation, and the persistent threat of online safety.

To discuss this further Lulu Gaboo spoke to Anzio Jacobs, the Child Protection and Safety Manager at the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

South African youth face hard realities

Ten people have been killed and at least 160 others kidnapped from a remote community in Nigeria's central Niger state. Authorities in the West African country say armed men suspected to be from Nigeria's militant group Boko Haram, invaded Kuchi village on Friday night.

Those kidnapped were mostly women and children, while those killed included local hunters who were providing security for the area. Meanwhile, human rights group, Amnesty International has accused the Nigerian authorities of being unwilling to tackle mass kidnappings.

Although sixty-four percent of Africans express confidence in their continent, they continue to favour non-African brands, which maintain only a fourteen-percent share of the most admired brands in Africa, this is according to Brand Africa's 14th annual Brand Africa Best Brands research and rankings. Among the Top 50 most admired countries, South Africa, Nigeria, the United States, China, and Kenya are identified as the top five countries perceived to contribute to a better Africa.
