Members from the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, together with the African Union are meeting to discuss the crisis in Niger.

The summit is expected to discuss using force to return Niger to constitutional democracy.

ECOWAS had given officers who seized power in Niamey on July 26th a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate President Mohamed  Bazoum or face the potential use of force, a warning the junta defied.

Cameroon is stepping up preparations ahead of the upcoming visit of Pope Leo the 14th, with major construction and road rehabilitation works ongoing in towns he is scheduled to visit.The Holy Father will be in Cameroon from April 15 to 18 as part of an African tour that will also take him to Algeria, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, marking his first trip to the continent. Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, has emphasized the importance of stronger media cooperation between China and South Africa, saying it is key to improving mutual understanding and people-to-people relations. He was speaking to Channel Africa in Pretoria at the launch of the Sino-South Africa Media Club, aimed at boosting collaboration between the two countries' media sectors. Peng says the initiative will help promote accurate storytelling and support cooperation in trade, education, and investment, noting that direct exchanges between citizens remain limited despite strong diplomatic ties.
