Togo leads the call for the UN member states to adopt a world map that more accurately reflects Africa's true size

View descriptionShare

Togo's Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, says the West Africa nation will call on United Nations member states to adopt a world map that more accurately reflects Africa's true size, moving away from the centuries-old Mercator projection.

The move follows a mandate from the African Union, which has tasked Lome with leading the "Correct the Map" campaign aimed at ending the use of the Mercator projection by governments and international institutions.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Moky Makura, the executive director of Africa No Filter, an advocacy group that is part of the campaign calling for adoption of the 2018 Equal Earth projection, which tries to reflect countries' true sizes.
