The European Union has announced a new 32-million-US dollar aid package for Senegal to try to stem the increased flow of migrants from the country. The number of migrants attempting the perilous voyage from Senegal to the Spanish Canary Islands has more than doubled in recent years. The Commissioner for International Partnerships said the EU did not want to see more tragedies.  As countries including Italy and Greece have introduced tougher measures to intercept sea crossings from Libya and Tunisia, human traffickers have looked for new routes into Europe.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to a Professor of Migration and Development at the University of Oxford, a Research Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand's African Centre for Migration & Society, and a co-director of the Wits-Oxford Mobility Governance Lab,  Professor Loren Landau.
