The Africa and African Diaspora Conference discusses reparatory justice, African unity and practical ways to confront historical injustices

On the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit, Moscow indicated that it is open to facilitating direct mediation talks between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. The proposal comes amid growing tensions between the two Horn of Africa neighbours, following a renewed escalation of conflict in northern Ethiopia. Addressing the summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the prolonged deterioration in relations between the two countries poses a threat to regional stability. He urged both governments to resolve their differences through structured diplomatic engagement. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Dr Albanie Marcossy, a public policy, governance, and development specialist.

The World Health Organisation says it hopes the TUMANI vaccine trials currently underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC will be able to respond to the urgent scientific questions regarding the current outbreak of the ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus disease. TUMANI,  which means hope in Swahili,  is a clinical trial designed so that several vaccine candidates could be evaluated within one research framework, using a ring-vaccination approach involving contacts of people with confirmed disease. The trials are led by the government of the DRC, integrated into the outbreak response and managed by the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale, the national public health and biomedical research institute. Thuto Ngobeni has more.

Lagarde says her decision is driven by a desire for greater freedom of speech and expression. She says officials at the central bank are bound by strict rules of neutrality. She has headed the European Central Bank since November 2019 and previously served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
