South Africa and Pakistan Strengthen Halal Trade Cooperation

South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) is set to host a special meeting (a "retreat") of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at Skukuza, Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga Province.

The three day meeting follows a resolution taken at the recent SADC Council of Ministers Meeting - held in Pretoria in March, where it was agreed that SADC Foreign Ministers would go on a "retreat" to reflect on the prevailing geo-political environment in the world and the impact thereof on the region.

Amnesty International South Africa is staging a silent demonstration for human rights defenders  in Pretoria where Acting  Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and police leadership are releasing the quarterly crime statistics.

The organisation says the authorities continue to fail to protect human rights defenders who play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and advancing human rights and social justice.

Amnesty International South Africa is urging the government to consider developing and adopting domestic legislation for the protection of human rights defenders in South Africa.
