Rwanda's government is considering introducing legislation that would bar children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms.

The country's Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, says multiple institutions are collaborating to ensure the proposed law can be effectively implemented, to curb technology-related crimes. Meanwhile, the National Child Development Agency says protecting children in the digital space has become a growing national priority as internet access expands.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame has announced that his country will soon recognise some Tanzanian citizens whose actions during the time of the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 in Rwanda demonstrated exceptional heroism.

Kagame made these remarks at the State House in Dar es Salaam during his one-day state visit to Tanzania on Sunday.

Kenyan police report that the death toll from flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains has risen to 18.

The landslides occurred in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Kiambu counties, in central and eastern Kenya, after days of intense rainfall. The country is currently experiencing widespread downpours during the peak of its March to May rainy season, which has caused significant damage to infrastructure and forced many residents from their homes.

 Death toll rises to 18 following flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Kenya

The advocacy group Access Now says its flagship human rights conference has been called off at the last minute following pressure from China on the government of Zambia. 

In a statement, Access Now said the 2026 edition of RightsCon, a long-running gathering focused on digital rights, was due to begin in the capital, Lusaka, but has now been cancelled. The group alleges that Chinese diplomats exerted pressure over the planned participation of Taiwanese civil society representatives.
