Mauritius' opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam was appointed prime minister following Sunday's general election, after the Alliance of Change won 60 of the 64 seats in parliament.

The Lepep alliance, a coalition of parties led by Pravind Jugnauth, now has two seats in parliament compared to the 42 after the 2019 election.

Ahead of the November 10 polls, the country was faced with a phone-tapping scandal, with leaked recordings of public figures posted online, leading to the government issuing a social media ban until after the election.

However, this led to an outcry and the decision was reversed within 24 hours.
