Malawi Congress Party is planning to amend its constitution to allow Chakwera to contest the 2030 general election as its presidential candidate
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is reportedly planning to amend its constitution to allow former President Lazarus Chakwera to contest the 2030 general election as its presidential candidate. Under the party's current rules, Chakwera is barred from leading the party or standing as its candidate again following his defeat in the September 2025 election. The party has reportedly confirmed that its structures and National Executive Committee have discussed changing the rules, arguing that Chakwera retains a strong mandate within the party and remains its best chance of regaining power. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Dr George Chaima, a political analyst based in Malawi.
