Human Rights Watch calls on South African government to support recognition of gender apartheid as a crime against humanity

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is calling on the South African government to use its influence to support the recognition of gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. The call comes amid the continued systematic oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

HRW says it has documented widespread restrictions on the rights of women and girls, including a ban on girls’ education beyond the sixth grade, severe limitations on women’s employment and freedom of movement, and restrictions on their participation in public life. The organisation argues that these abuses amount to the crime against humanity of gender persecution and is urging the international community to take stronger action.
