Human Rights campaigners in Tanzania say the government targets opponents ahead of local elections in December and a national vote in 2025.

The comments follow an incident where unidentified people abducted, beat and seriously injured a senior Tanzanian opposition party official, Aisha Machano, before dumping her in a forest.  

Machano is the second senior opposition official to be abducted and tortured within two months.

The first one was, Ali Kibao, a member of CHADEMA's secretariat, who was kidnapped from a bus by armed men early while travelling from Dar es Salaam to the coastal city of Tanga.

South Africa's African National Congress Party's first deputy general secretary Nomvula Mokonyane has extended her heartfelt congratulations to the people of Zambia on the celebration of their 60th anniversary of independence on the 24th of October. Mokonyane was speaking on Thursday at the commemoration ceremony event held at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa's capital, Pretoria. She said under the courageous leadership of former president Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia became a critical base for the ANC in exile. Mokonyane also congratulated the ruling Frelimo party in Mozambique for its victory in the October polls.

Over 50 Commonwealth Nations are meeting in Samoa for the Heads of Government Meeting. Some of the heads of state indicate that they are going to push for a conversation on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade when they meet for the association's first summit in two years. Meanwhile, United Kingdom (UK)'s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer says the focus of the summit should be on "real challenges on things like climate rather than endless discussions about reparations on the past. President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo has announced plans to establish a commission that will explore revisions to the country's constitution aiming to potentially remove term limits that will pave the way for his pursuit of a third term. The decision to address the contentious issues of constitutional reform and presidential term limits has potential risks pushing the mineral-rich nation, into further political crisis and unrest. Several opposition political party leaders are opposing this move saying that the current regime is only seeking to prolong its political survival to the detriment of the people's aspirations for fair and transparent governance.
