Former Botswana president Ian Khama's bold return to his country after three years in exile in South Africa, has significantly impacted the upcoming elections scheduled for 30th October.
Khama left Botswana in 2021, fearing for his safety and freedom.
During that year and again in 2023, the government under his successor, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, brought charges against him for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, money laundering, and receiving stolen property.
In 2022, authorities issued arrest warrants due to his failure to appear in court for the firearms charges.
However, on the 13th of September, he appeared at the Gaborone magistrate court where magistrate, Mareledi Dipate upheld a previous provisional decision to revoke the arrest warrants against him.
