The Congolese army backed by a pro-government militia is fighting to recapture territories the rebels took over last Friday.

Congolese government forces say they have received reinforcements from other parts of the country to fight the M23 rebels in Lubero territory.

The rebels captured the strategic town of Kanyongo and other villages in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo last week.

An escalation of violence in Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique is driving up cases of early and forced marriages.

This is according to data by Save the Children.

The organisation fears that the numbers are increasing further as conflict cuts children off from the protection and support that they need.

The United Nations High Commissioner for the Refugees - UNHCR, says more funds are needed to aid and protect the swelling population of Sudanese refugees.

The refugee agency has revised its appeal to 1-point-5 billion US dollars, up from 1-point 4 billion dollars it requested in January.

The appeal will help 3-point- 3 million refugees and the local communities hosting them in neighbouring countries through the end of the year.

Protests in Kenya are continuing with many rejecting appeals from President William Ruto for dialogue following his decision to withdraw proposed tax hikes last week.

At least 24 people were killed in clashes between protesters and police last week when parliament was briefly stormed and set ablaze.

The protests, which have been led by young people and organised largely on social media, were initially sparked by a finance bill intended to raise more than two billion US dollars in taxes and are now calling for Ruto to step down.

In protests of this nature, journalists have to disseminate news freely and fairly.
