South Africa's (SA) Social Development Department's Deputy Minister Mogamad Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks says he intends to draft a new five-year drug master plan to address the scourge of substance abuse as well as to take the lead in developing a new master plan to combat gender-based violence among other things.

SA to draft five-year drug master plan to address substance abuse

The pulling system which was used at a disused shaft 11 in Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa (SA) has been dismantled, thus making it impossible for the rescue efforts by the community members to continue.  

The community members have been using a pulling system to retrieve the miners from the shaft even the dead bodies have been pulled up utilising this system.

The dismantling has caused great concern among communities, human rights defenders and everyone who has been trying to assist the illegal miners who are underground. Samora Mangesi spoke to a Human Rights Defender from Mining Affected Communities United in Action Tauriq Jenkins...

As the New Year celebration draws closer South Africa's Johannesburg Metro's Public Safety member of a mayoral committee Dr Mgcini Mtshwaku has welcomed the restriction of the sale of alcohol from 18HOO CAT in the city centre by the South African Police Services, a move that aims to reduce alcohol-related incidents and promote public safety.

Dr Mtshwaku says past experiences and statistics show that restricting liquor trading hours can help minimize alcohol-related harms. Samora Mangesi spoke to Mtshwaku...
