As Malawi approaches its general election on September 16, 2025, lingering concerns from the 2019 presidential election, dubbed the "Tipp-Ex election" continue to cast a shadow over the country's electoral integrity.
The African Centre for Governance has highlighted several institutional and procedural shortcomings, such as politically motivated appointments to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), concerns about the accuracy of the voters' roll, challenges in implementing electronic voting systems, and persistent voter apathy, particularly among youth and marginalized communities.
