Most South African (SA) township and rural households earn income that's below the poverty line. This is contained in a study conducted by the country's Competition Commission.

The report paints a picture of dire economic hardship faced by residents in these areas. Focusing on businesses and consumers, the study provides a detailed picture of the challenges facing Township and rural economies, as well as the opportunities that could be unlocked through a more competitive and inclusive market.
