African countries to increase the uptake of digital technologies to drive employment

 Several events are taking place across South Africa to mark the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising. On this day in 1976, hundreds of students went out to protest the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. The peaceful march turned to tragedy when apartheid police opened fire, killing young people, including 12-year-old Hector Pieterson. We now focus on the march taking place today, organised by the Seth Mazibuko Foundation in honour of the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 1976. The foundation is calling on the youth of 2026 to carry forward the unfinished work of dignity, education, justice, unity, civic responsibility and national renewal. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Channel Africa reporter, Sisi Segalo.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs has confirmed that the Reserve Bank of Malawi has opened dedicated donation accounts in both Malawi Kwacha and foreign currency as the government ramps up efforts to repatriate an estimated 10,000 Malawians from South Africa. The voluntary programme, described as a "national humanitarian mission", was launched in response to growing concern over reported tensions with undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa. Lulu Gaboo spoke to Phaskani Msiska from the Malawi Diaspora Voluntary Return Support Programme.

Concerns are mounting over plans to develop 100 acres of upland forest within Nairobi National Park. Environmental group Green Belt Movement has stressed that the park is not vacant land awaiting construction, but a critical ecological asset that supports biodiversity, climate resilience, tourism, and the well-being of current and future generations. The organisation, alongside other environmental groups, is calling for the immediate suspension of any planned construction until meaningful public participation has taken place and assurances are provided that the development will not come at the expense of protected ecosystems.
