African countries to increase the uptake of digital technologies to drive employment

Rwanda's government is considering introducing legislation that would bar children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms.

The country's Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, says multiple institutions are collaborating to ensure the proposed law can be effectively implemented, to curb technology-related crimes. Meanwhile, the National Child Development Agency says protecting children in the digital space has become a growing national priority as internet access expands.

The Pan-African Parliament is set to elect a new Bureau today.

The incoming leadership will serve a three-year term under a regional rotation system. In this cycle, the positions will be distributed across the continent's five regions: President (North Africa), First Vice-President (East Africa), Second Vice-President (West Africa), Third Vice-President (Central Africa), and Fourth Vice-President (Southern Africa).

The Senegalese National Assembly has approved changes to the country's electoral code, ​introducing provisions that could pave the way ‌for Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to run in the 2029 presidential election.

The legislation amends provisions that had previously disqualified Sonko from running for office, potentially removing a key legal ​obstacle to ​his candidacy. The ⁠bill will now be sent to the president, who must decide whether to ​sign it into law.
