UNICEF report highlights progress in registrations of births over the past 5 years

View descriptionShare

Over 500 million children under five, nearly 8 in 10 have had their births registered in the past five years, marking significant progress in securing legal identity worldwide.

This is highlighted in UNICEF's latest report, "The Right Start in Life: Global Levels and Trends in Birth Registration" which updates data since 2019, when the global birth registration rate stood at 75%.

The report reveals that while the rate has risen to 77%, 150 million children under five approximately 2 in 10 remain unregistered and invisible to government systems.

Additionally, over 50 million children with registered births lack birth certificates.

For more, Aurelie Kalenga spoke to Nankali Maksud, Senior Advisor on Harmful Practices at UNICEF.
