South African Police services given the green light to spot check foreigners

View descriptionShare

Last week we reported on the South African Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi giving the South African Police services the green light to spot check foreigners to ascertain whether they were legally in the country while briefing the home affairs portfolio committee on the backlog in permit appeals for asylum seekers and refugees. The Minister Minister, has set the record straight saying the media headlines suggest he gave instructions to police officers to stop and ask people about their identification status are "sensational" and trying to create controversy where there is none, adding that section 41 (1) of the Immigration Act of 13 2002, empowers law enforcement authorities to ascertain one's legal status. More from head of research at the university of Johannesburg's Institute for the future of knowledge, Dr Anthony Kaziboni.
