South African Authorities Reject Misinformation Claims Amid Mossel Bay Unrest

View descriptionShare

South African police are continuing investigations into violent unrest in the coastal town of Mossel Bay, where several people have been killed and hundreds displaced in recent days. Authorities have dismissed social media claims that one of the victims, a teenager, was targeted because of his language or in connection with anti-immigration protests. The situation has drawn further attention after Mozambique's government said five of its citizens were among those killed during the violence, raising regional concern over the impact of the unrest. Police say multiple murder cases linked to the incidents remain under investigation, while warning against the spread of unverified information as tensions persist in affected communities. Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to police spokesperson in South Africa's Western Cape Province, Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
